Whenever there’s been a choice between elevating individual stats and winning, Patrick Mahomes has always prioritized the latter, and the proof is the Kansas City Chiefs’ rising dominance while aiming for the unprecedented three-peat. However, not everyone takes the stats for granted– not with Mahomes’ own teammates.
In a surprising twist, some Chiefs players favored the Denver Broncos’ rookie Bo Nix over their own superstar quarterback, Mahomes. At the Super Bowl LIX media day, the reporters had a crucial question in mind while approaching the Chiefs to elevate quarterback performances.
But the twist was that both the quarterbacks were kept anonymous and only illuminated by their stats: Quarterback A with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and Quarterback B with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Surprisingly, some players went with the better touchdown count of 29 which turned out to be Nix, not Mahomes.
“You’ve barely taken Patrick Mahomes over Bo Nix,” highlighted the reporter, to which, backup quarterback Carson Wentz replied, “Oh no!” before giving an awkward laugh.

After the initial surprise followed by awkward laughs, the players quickly defended their stance, asserting, “It don’t matter as long as 15 [Mahomes’ jersey number] is on the field, it’s over [for the other teams.]” However, statistical revelation has ignited a fascinating debate, further underscoring the burgeoning potential of the Broncos’ rookie quarterback.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo and Patrick Mahomes acknowledge Bo Nix’s potential
After a standout rookie season, Nix validated the Broncos’ faith in drafting him as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While the young quarterback received considerable praise from his team, the rival teams also didn’t hold back from acknowledging his undeniable potential.
“He’s the real deal. He grew as a rookie… The Broncos have a bright future with him. I’m really impressed,” said the Chiefs’ defensive back Steve Spagnuolo at the Super Bowl LIX media day.

The elite quarterback Mahomes also acknowledged the potential of the Nix, who completed his rookie season with 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 430 rushing yards while also ending the Broncos’ playoff drought lasting since 2015. “He’s a competitor. He’s going to be a great quarterback in this league,” said Mahomes about Nix.

Interestingly, the game that led the Broncos to the playoffs was against the Chiefs in the final week of the 2024 regular season. Completing 26-of-29 passes with above 300 yards, Nix gave a blowout defeat to the Chiefs at 38-0, whose starting team was resting for that game.
