In sports, athletes say a lot of things. Sometimes, their claims come true. Other times, they age badly, leaving the said athletes running for cover. Usually, that involves their own or their team’s performances, but in Sophie Cunningham‘s case, it was neither.
The Indiana Fever star had posted a tweet asking fans attending games not to throw objects onto the court. This was after a 2nd NSFW toy was thrown at the game between the Chicago Sky and the Golden State Valkyries.
The perpetrator of the first incident at the Valkyries and Atlanta Dream game was identified and banned. However, the league and the Sky are working hard to identify the 2nd individual. While Cunningham and her Fever were playing at Crypto.com Arena, a 3rd neon green NSFW toy came hurtling down the court and right near the 28-year-old guard.
Los Angeles Sparks star Kelsey Plum came over to kick the toy off the floor. Then Sophie Cunningham was seen laughing and joking with the Sparks players about it, knowing that her tweet must have prompted another individual to throw it in her direction. After the game, she wrote this on IG.
No way that thing actually hit me. I knew I shouldn’t have tweeted that.

She also added another tweet on X.

This was her way to troll herself, knowing her message possibly became a challenge for the latest perpetrator. These incidents are starting to paint the WNBA’s security in a bad light.
A 4th NSFW toy was found at the Sparks-Fever game
Los Angeles Sparks staff took away the 3rd toy. Then, security personnel were actively looking for the perpetrator. During the search, they came across another similar neon green NSFW toy.

It was found to be in the stands, and the ticket holders seated in that area claimed it was thrown from somewhere behind them. Arena security removed that toy, but these incidents are becoming an embarrassment for the league.

The problem is that those toys are made up of silicone or other plastic blends. Therefore, metal detectors placed at arenas will not be able to figure out if a fan is carrying any such thing. Teams might have to invest in additional scanning machines so that such incidents do not repeat. However, all of this will become an additional hassle for the league’s die-hard fans.
Sophie Cunningham gets fined $1500 for calling out officials
Sophie Cunningham does not shy away from speaking her mind. Be it manhandling opponents or calling out officials, she has done it all. For the latter, the WNBA recently fined her after she spoke up at a press conference.
Press conferences are league-mandated events that players have to attend. Many players choose to avoid speaking up to avoid sending a wire transfer to pay a fine. The 28-year-old Missouri native did not expect her to be fined a 2nd time. This time, the offense was not in an official space, and neither was it to any credited reporter.
Instead, as Cunningham revealed on her podcast, Show Me Something, she was fined for speaking about the bad officiating on the debut episode of this podcast. This time, the amount was also larger, at $1500.

“they email our gm and she pulls me aside…and she just smiled and goes hey they’re gonna fine you again. i even told them i credited them that their job was hard! i did say that and i said that i would not be good at it.” pic.twitter.com/fEVq4kIJws
The Fever guard claimed that she did talk about how officiating is a tough job. She also spoke about how they just want it to be fair. But it seems the league found it egregious enough to send her a notice asking her to pay the fine.
