Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever have been at the center of some unwanted attention recently. Cunningham was ejected last week after a flagrant foul on Jacy Sheldon of the Sun. In the same game, Marina Mabrey knocked Clark over from the blindside after Sheldon poked her eye. This led to frayed tempers and Cunningham eventually setting out to send a statement to her opponents.

After Cunningham put Sheldon in a head lock following her flagrant foul, she became a viral sensation. The former Phoenix Mercury guard’s good looks, even temperament and bubbly nature have shone through. In addition, her willingness to stand up for the face of the WNBA has garnered her a lot of respect. Fever fans came together to buy her jersey in droves, and the product is now out of stock.

The incident also drew a lot of attention to Cunningham’s political views and her social media handles. She was previously notorious for her open support to Trump in a league that largely leans blue. But since her move to Indiana, the focus has been on her chemistry with her new teammates. She has blended in quite well with Stanford graduate and starter Lexie Hull, in addition to becoming fast friends with Caitlin Clark.

The trio is often seen hanging out together and participating in team drills and meetings close by. After weeks of such scenes, fans have noted their chemistry. They’re often deemed as the ‘Three Musketeers’ by Fever fans, and sometimes also as the ‘Three Idiots’. There may now be a third new term that will be popularized among the fanbase after Sophie Cunningham has given them fodder with her graphic tee.

Arriving at the T-Mobile Center via the pre-game tunnel, Cunningham was spotted wearing a t-shirt with her, Lexie Hull and Caitlin Clark together. The text on her white t-shirt reads ‘Tres Leches’, which translates to ‘Three Milks’ in English.

This was a throwaway caption by Indiana Fever photo media members in a past photograph. But it’s clear that Cunningham likes its usage and is leaning into the memes.

Sophie Cunningham wants to be the enforcer for Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark had a rough start to her rookie season last year in a lot of different ways. She was guarded physically and did not get the benefit of the referees’ whistle despite the manner she was guarded in. She battled flagrant fouls – she was the target of a sixth of all flagrant foul calls in 2024. Yet, there was no one on the Fever who stepped up to try and stop the manhandling of their franchise player.

Despite investing in veteran help like Brianna Turner, Natasha Howard and DeWanna Bonner, this ‘soft’ label has stuck with the team. The likes of Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull, while energetic and wily, are not the type of players to do gamesmanship and keep their opponents in line with a physical approach. But Sophie Cunningham is not willing to allow this to continue, taking matters into her own hands.

She said as much in an interview ahead of the Fever’s loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday afternoon:

I’m not focused on the extra-curricular activities, and you know what? During that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that, it was a buildup of a couple of years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. At the end of the day. I’m gonna protect my teammates, that’s what I do.
