Sophie Cunningham does not hold back when she wants to point out some concerns or when confronting opposing players. The recently turned 29-year-old has built a reputation for being fearless in every regard.
Whether it is defending teammate Caitlin Clark against physical play, or it is confronting opponents who want to intimidate the Indiana Fever in some form or the other.
Then there are the instances of calling out WNBA officials for their questionable officiating. The first time she ridiculed them in a TikTok video, the league fined her $500.
The next instance was triple that amount. This was after she called out the unfair fouls in the 1st episode of her brand-new podcast, ‘Show Me Something’.
After their game against the Dallas Wings, the Missouri native talked about how Paige Bueckers was unfairly getting a lot of easy fouls. She labeled the rookie as being untouchable.
Sophie Cunningham was fined a 3rd time, and she had to wire $1500 to the league. This ticked off her sister, Lindsey Cunningham, who wrote this on X.
WNBA, maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you, Sophie Cunningham.

This tweet came immediately after the Fever guard went down with a knee injury. The full weight of the Connecticut Sun’s Bria Hartley fell on Sophie Cunningham’s right knee. The latter had to be helped off the floor and did not return to the game.
Sophie Cunningham’s mother continues the barrage
Sophie Cunningham is set to undergo an MRI when they return to Indianapolis. The franchise has its fingers crossed, as a serious one would effectively end the guard’s season. Knowing this, the guard’s mother pointed the finger at the league.
Harley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes. She’s plain mean and plays out of control.

She effectively called out the WNBA for failing to control Bria Hartley, who has displayed a level of clumsiness and aggression that has irked many fans.

In her last game, she wrestled the Chicago Sky’s Rebecca Allen to the ground. The Australian was left with bruise and scratch marks all over her, which enraged a lot of fans.
That scuffle led to some ejections, but as per Paula Cunningham, the Sun guard does not seem to have learnt a lesson. She ended up deleting this tweet, possibly because it was a direct attack on a player.
Sophie Cunningham’s injury will pile on the pressure on the Fever
Sophie Cunningham has become an integral part of the Indiana Fever. Whether it is through her tenacious defense, her floor awareness, experience, and shooting, the guard has helped the team play better basketball than last season.

That is, before her team-building efforts, and her tenacity come to the fore. All of this makes her important if the Fever is to progress into the playoffs. If she is ruled out for the season, there is a chance they could slide out of the standings.
There are no free agents available who can replicate what the Missouri native brings to the table. Even if Caitlin Clark returns from her prolonged absence, she would need a dedicated cutter and shooter like Cunningham.
The Fever have 5 days before their next game. They would hope that the MRI comes out better than expected, and the rest is enough to get the 29-year-old back on her feet.
Even if she requires more time, the Fever can afford to let her miss a couple of games. Her experience will be valuable when the postseason rolls in.
