Sophie Cunningham was touted as a major impact player off the bench. At least that was the thought when basketball fans saw the news of the Indiana Fever trading for the veteran guard.

Throughout this 2025 season, that role has seen some enhancements. Caitlin Clark‘s injuries have seen Cunningham’s usage go up, which proportionately had a positive impact on her performances.

Then, after both of Clark’s point guard substitutes, Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, were ruled out with season-ending injuries, the Missouri native was tasked with a bigger role.

The Missouri native now had to bring the ball up the court, find open teammates, and orchestrate the floor, along with the usual responsibility of scoring a few points, and continue her stellar performances on defense.

The recently turned 29-year-old was doing that well enough, but the Fever lost two games at home as they struggled to play well in the opening segments of both of those matchups.

The game against the Connecticut Sun was no different, and the Fever found themselves trailing in the first quarter. A few minutes into the 2nd segment, officials blew the whistle when the Missouri alum went down clutching her right knee.

Sophie Cunningham was writhing in pain as teammates and Fever staff rushed to tend to her. They had to help her off the court, as she was avoiding any pressure on that right leg.

Sophie Cunningham to get MRI on Monday

It is quite difficult when a player gets injured while on a road trip. Thankfully, for both Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever, this game against the Connecticut Sun will be followed by 5 days’ rest before their next home game.

According to Scott Agnes, the Fever has scheduled an MRI for the 29-year-old on Monday. She was seen in the locker room after the team celebrated an emotional come-from-behind victory.

She was, as usual, smiling, but there is still a concern over the condition of her knee. The Missouri star has battled ankle injuries and played through them all season long.

But a serious knee injury could jeopardize her season and could leave the Fever scrambling to sign another player. With Caitlin Clark’s return still a question mark, it is unclear if the franchise will make the playoffs.

Fever could slide out of playoff contention after Sophie Cunningham’s injury

Sophie Cunningham might not be an All-Star or one of the great players in the league. But to the Indiana Fever, she is an important player, as her contributions have had a bigger impact than what the stat sheet suggests.

The 29-year-old’s tenacity on defense, plus her awareness and experience, have helped the team play better basketball than last season. She has also helped the team cover up in Caitlin Clark’s absence.

If she were to miss the rest of the season, the Fever would be without 4 impactful players. It is not easy for a team to come together, go through multiple iterations of their rotations, and still make the playoffs.

Their current form is not something to talk about, and coupled with their injuries, their remaining schedule poses a lot of question marks.

Out of the 9 remaining games, 8 are against teams that are fighting for their own playoff seedings. It will be difficult to muster wins, especially when 5 of them are away from home.

No doubt the Fever enjoys a plethora of supporters on the road. Even then, that is not enough to overcome the loss of 4 important players, and their recent form. It is possible that the Indiana Fever could miss the playoffs altogether.
