Team India under Rohit Sharma scripted history as they became champions of the T20 World Cup 2024. They won the T20 World Cup undefeated and became the first side to do that. Sharma was absolutely brilliant as the leader. He was tactically fantastic and was always ahead of the game. Under him, Team India also won all the 10 matches dominantly till the final of the ODI World Cup 2023. However, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the final which broke their dreams.
Meanwhile, former BCCI President and Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, has stated that he faced a lot of criticism when he appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain. However, as India have now become world champions under Sharma, the fans have stopped abusing him and have also forgotten that he was the one who made that decision.
When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of Team India, everyone criticized me. Now India has won the T20 World Cup under Rohit, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, everyone has forgotten that it was me who appointed him.Sourav Ganguly said ( Via Aaj Tak)
Sourav Ganguly faced a lot of criticism when he appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain
Ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2021, Virat Kohli announced that he was going to leave the captaincy in the T20I format to manage his workload, but would continue as the ODI and Test captaincy. Rohit Sharma was unanimously going to succeed him for that role.
However, Ganguly appointed Sharma as the captain of the ODI team as well, citing that there can’t be two different captains in the white-ball format. He also stated that he has had discussions with Kohli and had requested him to continue as the T20I captain.
However, ahead of the tour of South Africa, Kohli dropped a bombshell and stated that there were no requests made by Ganguly and contradicted Ganguly’s statements. This gave rise to a huge controversy and for months, Ganguly had to face the ire of the Kohli fans. Meanwhile, Kohli also went on to resign from the Test captaincy, which added more fuel to the ongoing fire.
Kohli fans took to social media and had bashed Ganguly for disrespecting him. Ganguly in other interviews had stated that it was time for Sharma to lead India and bring laurels in ICC tournaments. He also felt that the team can achieve newer heights under Sharma’s captaincy and Rahul Dravid serving as the head coach.
