South African cricketer Beyers Swanepoel ‘abandoned’ his team midway through a championship final to catch a flight to England, in what is being called one of the most unprofessional moments in the sport. His sudden departure left his team in a lurch, resulting in a loss.

The Lions were playing the Titans in the Division One final of the 2025-26 CSA One-Day Challenge, which is South Africa’s domestic 50-over tournament, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The match featured several notable players on both teams, including Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, and others. Fast bowling all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, the player under the scanner, played for the Lions.

A death-overs specialist, the 27-year-old, however, finished his ten-over spell in the 43rd over of the Titans’ chase of a 249-run target, taking a solid 3/44. To everyone’s surprise, Swanepoel then stormed off the pitch. He went into the Lions’ dugout and bid everyone farewell before departing the stadium to catch a 7.30 PM flight to the UK, where he would represent Worcestershire in the upcoming County season.

Initially, his Lions’ teammates and skipper Bjorn Fortuin believed that he left the field because of an injury, with the home side even allowing a substitute fielder to replace Swanepoel. With seven overs due, the umpires probed the all-rounder’s unexplained disappearance, which led them to ascertain that he had indeed left the stadium. The umpires ruled that a substitute could not be permitted, as the 27-year-old had not departed due to an injury.

The Lions were forced to defend their 248-run total with just ten players on the pitch, and ultimately lost the match by three wickets on the penultimate ball. It was a 78-run stand between Keegan Petersen (90 off 134) and Duan Jansen (61* off 61) that took the Titans over the line.

In the aftermath, CSA executive Eddie Khoza confirmed that the board is investigating the situation. It has also been revealed that Beyers Swanepoel‘s NOC is still under review, and the Lions were unaware of his deal with Worcestershire.

We are investigating the matter and following protocol as per NOC regulation. We will advise everyone accordingly on the way forward once the investigation is concluded within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Lions are mulling terminating Swanepoel’s contract, given that he prioritized reaching England over domestic commitments. Meanwhile, the County club, with whom he signed a red-ball contract last December, is yet to decide on the steps ahead.

Titans claim South Africa’s domestic One-Day cup honors as Lions’ player abandons team in final

South Africa’s domestic cricketing season came to an end, with the Titans defeating Lions in the Division-One final of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. The final, played at the Wanderers Stadium, went down to the last over, with the Titans triumphing by three wickets.

After winning the toss, the Lions opted to bat first. Only Rassie van der Dussen went past the 50-run mark, as he scored 57 runs off 86 balls. Contributions from Temba Bavuma (43 off 42), Delano Potgieter (33 off 27), and Reeza Hendricks (31 off 54) saw the Lions make it to a first-innings total of 248/9. For the Titans, Lizaad Williams picked up a three-wicket haul, while giving away 49 runs in his ten-over spell.

While it seemed like an easy chase for the Titans, they shockingly lost openers Lesego Senokwane and Rivaldo Moonsamy without a run on the board. However, Keegan Petersen scored 90 runs off 134 balls, while forging partnerships with Keagan Lion-Cachet (35 off 37) and Duan Jansen (61 off 61) to take the visitors close to the target. Five singles off the last over saw the Titans triumph.

Beyers Swanepoel was the pick among the bowlers for the Lions, as he finished with figures of 3/44, alongside Codi Yusuf‘s three scalps. However, Swanepoel’s display was overshadowed by the fact that he deserted his team, midway through the second innings.
