The word domination is synonymous with the South Korean women’s archery team. The elite squad maintained their stronghold over the sport as they recorded the nation’s 10th consecutive gold medal in the category of women’s team archery at the Paris Olympic Games.
South Korea nearly lost its consecutive win streak to China as it managed to beat the rival nation by a margin of 1 point. The final score was 5-4 in favor of the former country. The recent victory means that South Korea has won every single women’s archery contest since the sport was introduced in the Olympic Games in 1988.
Falling right behind the champions were China which settled for the silver medal and Mexico which ended up with a bronze. China came out of the gates swinging, and while the reigning champions managed to win the first two sets of the match to maintain a lead early on, the third and fourth sets did not go well for them. South Korea hit a speed bump as China managed to tie the score up.
South Korea leads the charge among all nations in the Olympic archery category
Their squad comprised Jeon Hun-young, Nam Su-hyeon, and Lim Si-hyeon, who made sure they carried the legacy of their nation forward by securing its 28th gold medal in the archery category. South Korea has 44 overall medals in the Olympic archery category, demonstrating sheer domination in the sport.
At the Paris Olympic Games, there were moments when it seemed realistic that the nation was likely to wind up losing its number one spot. During the semifinals earlier on Sunday, the women needed a late rally and were forced into a shoot-off round to keep the Netherlands at bay.
The finals were a nail-biting experience for the trio but fortunately, Jeon Hun-Young and Lim Si-Hyeon came up clutch to hit a perfect 10 with their last arrows in order to push their nation past the finish line. This victory means South Korea has won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze at the Paris Olympic Games. The nation is right behind Australia, which leads the medal count with 4 golds and 2 silvers. It is safe to say that women’s archery will continue to be dominated by South Korea for the foreseeable future.
