Paris was witness to an incredible night of events as the U23 team of Spain went onto edge past France. After a topsy-turvy encounter of 120 minutes, the Spanish kids went onto hammer two goals in the extra time to seize the ace.

The Parc-des-Princes was a full house for the grand finale as Spain started on a rollicking note to leave France unsettled. In what was a frenzied 20-minute spell in the first half, France opened the scoring. However, Enzo Millot snuffed out the slender lead by opening the proceedings for Spain in the 11th minute followed by a second from Fermin Lopez in the 18th. Alex Baena added a third in the 28th minute to propel Spain to a 3-1 lead.

However, Thierry’s Henry’s lads came back fighting with renewed vim and vigour as they carved a memorable fightback to finish the regulation ninety minutes of action on level-pegging. Jean-Phillipe Mateta, the leading goal-scorer for France in the tournament, was the one to hammer home the equalizer from the spot in the 90th minute while Michael Olise slammed a clinical free-kick to reduce the deficit.

After the dramatic turnaround of events in the 93rd minute as the French onlookers were simmering with fever pitch excitement, Spain’s Sergio Camello found himself at the receiving end of a sensational pass from Sergio Gomez and the former made no mistake in smashing home the all-important fourth.

Surprisingly what could have been another screaming imposition of tie-breaker after the intervention of VAR at the end of the 120 minutes swayed in favor of Spain as Camello added a brace from a sensational counterattacking brand of football to clinch the gold medal for Spain.

Here is what X had to say about Spain’s impressive display in the Olympics final

Spain started the tournament with a bang as they edged past Uzbekistan comprehensively followed by another clinical win against Dominican Republic. Despite a shock defeat in the final group stage fixture against Egypt, they thumped Japan in the quarter-finals by a staggering 3-0 while coming back from a one-goal deficit to edge past Morocco in the race for the summit clash. Eventually, in a swashbuckling display against France, they made the gold medal theirs, powering to a 5-3 win.

The internet was in thrall of the youngsters, especially seven of them who come from the La Masia academy. With Lamine Yamal coming in from La Masia and making the ripples for all the right reasons in the Euro 2024, X couldn’t shut up about the fact that it was La Masia who cooked France.

The internet has been heavily impressed by what they saw from the youngsters rising to the occasion when it mattered the most. How far will they go in the long race, that still remains to be seen. But at the moment, the Barcelona and the Spain fans will continue their jubilations for a while.
