New Orleans Saints fans did not expect much when Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener were the only quarterbacks the franchise had on its preseason roster.
They did sign undrafted quarterback Hunter Dekkers out of Iowa State, but waived him after their first preseason game. This left those three young QBs as the only options at the most important position.
Franchise fans were already surprised when the top brass selected Tyler Shough in the second round of this year’s draft, who spent essentially seven years with three different college programs.
They felt that the top executives could have had their franchise quarterback in Shedeur Sanders instead of a college journeyman who had effectively had only one good college campaign. It was also not clear if Shough was brought in to back up Rattler after a disappointing run last season as the now-retired Derek Carr‘s deputy.
Earlier, the franchise waived Jake Haener, along with several others, when they had to finalize their 53-man roster. Then they came out with another update, which ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported.
Saints named Spencer Rattler their starting QB.

On paper, this seems like the logical move. During the preseason, Tyler Shough had more pass attempts than his QB teammate but was not as good as the South Carolina prospect.

Moreover, Spencer Rattler has more NFL experience, which could mean he can be more stable when the grown men standing opposite him come hurtling down the field. The 24-year-old’s scrambling ability also gives the Saints a dual-threat option whenever defenses collapse the pocket.
Fans wonder what will come of Saints after Spencer Rattler takes over as QB1
The problem with this decision and whatever the New Orleans Saints have taken when it comes to quarterbacks is that neither of them screams ‘elite’. Fans are wondering what will happen this season if both these QBs struggle.
The chances of that happening are highly likely, as fans do not have confidence in Rattler or Shough. The decision to name the former as QB1 might stabilize the team in the initial rounds.
But fans fear this will be a losing season for the ages. They feel the team is intentionally tanking for a chance to select Arch Manning in the next draft. Check out examples of those disappointed reactions below:

Many fans believe the franchise will waft through the upcoming season and focus most of their resources on finding the players they will keep next season, as well as scouting the next set of prospects to select in the next draft.
Saints have surprisingly easy strength of schedule
Their scouting departments might have to weigh in on the fact that the New Orleans Saints have the second weakest schedule of all teams in the upcoming 2025 season.

New head coach Kellen Moore will have a chance to flex his creativity and drill in the schemes he wants the players to follow. This easy strength of schedule might be beneficial for building confidence.
At the same time, it could also be a smokescreen. If the team helmed by Spencer Rattler can show off its offensive strengths against similarly weak teams, it might give the franchise the complete analysis they are seeking.
They will play just three playoff teams from last season, and could use those to determine how their players can fare against better competition. But all three of those games are before their week 11 bye.
Their final 7 games will see them face 6 non-playoff and similarly inconsistent teams. Despite all that, fans are not sure if the team can even finish the season with a single win.
