Stan Wawrinka has dropped outside the Top 100 in the ATP rankings having struggled on the court in recent years. However, after winning his second match of the season at Umag, a fan on social media advised him to retire from the sport. But the 40-year-old star gave an X-rated reply to the fan.

Wawrinka was once one of the top players on tour and he made a name for himself during the era of the Big 3. He claimed his first Grand Slam at the 2014 Australian Open after beating Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals and then facing Rafael Nadal in the final, where he produced an excellent 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 result to win the title.

Wawrinka later won two Grand Slams before he began to struggle on tour. He’s currently one of the oldest players in the Top 200 in the men’s circuit. He has not won a single Grand Slam match since the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and has dropped to World No.153 in the ATP rankings.

However, he picked up his second ATP win of the season after beating Alvaro Guillen Meza 6-4, 6-1 at the Goran Ivanisevic Stadium of the Umag Open. The Swiss legend was returning to the event where he claimed his first ATP title in 2006 after his opponent, Djokovic, retired due to a breathing problem.

Just hours after the win a fan on X then advised Wawrinka to retire from the sport even after the win. The fan added ‘unc’ to the plea. The former World No.3 replied with a middle finger emoji and heart sign emoji as he shut down the fan’s request. It is not the first time that a fan has requested him to retire and he has often revealed that he will leave the sport when he knows he can’t compete again.

He has shown passion for the sport recently which has seen him get over the line through countless encounters. Most recently, he reached the semi-finals of the Iasi Open, an ATP Challenger event in Romania. But he couldn’t reach the final as he lost to Danish youngster Elmer Moller in straight sets.

At the Umag Open, he will take on Bosnian star Damir Dzumhur on Wednesday (July 23) in the second round. The 40-year-old will hope to get the better of Dzumhur, who recently reached the third round of the French Open before losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling four-set tie.

Stan Wawrinka’s coach says it will be tough working with another player when the Swiss star retires

Stan Wawrinka will never forget the 2015 season, in which he played some of his best tennis, beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open to win his second Grand Slam and winning the Rotterdam and Tokyo titles. He also finished the year as the World No.4 in the ATP rankings.

His long-time coach Magnus Norman, who was with him from 2013 to 2017 and later joined the team in 2023, revealed during an interview with Puntodebreak that it will be tough working with another player on tour:

Without a doubt, I appreciate the energy and willingness he keeps putting in every day he steps onto a tennis court, whether to compete or for a simple practice session. He always tries to give his best all the time, which is a gift for a coach; I would say it’s the best thing in the world. This morning we practised for an hour and a half, and I confess that I still enjoy it exactly like the first day. After all we have experienced together, it will be very tough for me to start working with another player.

Wawrinka cannot play at the Canadian Open due to his ranking position. However, there are hopes that he will receive a wildcard for the Cincinnati Open and US Open as he won both tournaments in 2016.
