Andy Murray is likely playing his last ever Wimbledon this year following a withdrawal at Queen’s Club Championships due to a back injury. His exact physical condition is still in question and he may well play his final Grand Slam singles match at home this week. He is partnering with his brother Jamie in the doubles category as well.

Wimbledon has been the most important tournament in his career, contributing to 2 of his 3 Grand Slam titles. Another great champion who had won Grand Slams during the reign of the Big 3, Stan Wawrinka, gave his opinion about Murray and what legacy he would be leaving behind in case he decides to hang up his shoes. The Swiss veteran was asked about his fondest memories with the Scot.

It’s been more than 20 years. Of course there are many. The first time with the roof closed here was something special to play here against him at home. He’s been an amazing champion. He pushed everybody. He won everything in the sport that you can win. He’s been #1. He’s been an example for many players. He’s a great guy.

The two legends have a lot in common, like their rivalries with members of the Big 3, their Grand Slam count, and even their career trajectories. This had allowed them to develop a good relationship and Wawrinka emphasizes this.

We’re good friends. As I’ve said, it’s been more than 20 years. We spent so much time together on court, during practice… just tons of time together. We always had a good relationship.

Wawrinka defeated Charles Broom 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round while Monfils outlasted his compatriot Adrian Mannarino, who was the 22nd seed, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. This will be the seventh meeting between the veterans and they are currently tied at three wins apiece.
