In Short
  • Stan Wawrinka plans to retire after the current season, with Basel potentially being his farewell tournament.
  • He aims to play against Carlos Alcaraz before retiring and will participate in several upcoming tournaments, including Barcelona and Wimbledon.
  • Wawrinka has won 16 singles titles in his career, with his last title coming at the 2017 Geneva Open.

Sebastian Baez dashed Stan Wawrinka‘s hope of a matchup against Carlos Alcaraz. In the first round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Argentinian ace clinched a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Wawrinka to set up a second-round clash with the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Wawrinka aims to play Alcaraz before his retirement and is expected to get more chances to face the Spaniard. He will call time on his career after the end of this season. At the press conference after his Monte-Carlo Masters exit, the Swiss veteran revealed in which tournament he is planning to hang up his racket.

Next week I play in Barcelona, and then probably in the qualifiers of Rome and Geneva. I will see if I have the opportunity to play in Roland Garros. I would like to play on grass, hopefully at Wimbledon. Then Gstaad, Estoril. I hope to play the US Open. We will see if I play any tournament before, maybe the qualifiers of Cincinnati or a Challenger. After that, we’ll see. Basel, for sure, and also Lyon.

Wawrinka has played just one final in a home tournament. It was back in 2005 when he lost to Gaston Gaudio in the final of the Swiss Open Gstaad. Last year, the first edition of the Hellenic Championship was held in Athens, and Wawrinka entered, but suffered a round-of-16 exit, losing to eventual runner-up Lorenzo Musetti.

There is a possibility, yes (that Basel will be his farewell tournament). But we will see. It depends on the tournaments that come after. Last year, I played in Athens, it was an incredible tournament, and I loved it. So perhaps I will play my last one there.

Stan Wawrinka added

The last time Wawrinka played a singles final was at the 2023 Croatia Open, losing the match to Alexei Popyrin. And the last time he won a title was at the 2017 Geneva Open by defeating Mischa Zverev.

I grew up on a farm and dreamed of becoming a professional player with the sole objective of giving my best every day, to be able to surpass my limits without barriers. I never set out to win a Grand Slam or be No.1. I just wanted to be better, always, and that is what I achieved in my career.

Stan Wawrinka said at the press conference

Wawrinka is the winner of 16 singles titles, seven of which he won on clay. Last year on the clay swing, after his round-of-16 exit in the Bucharest Open, Wawrinka suffered an opening-round exit in Monte Carlo.

In Barcelona, his campaign ended in the first round, and after finishing as the runner-up in a Challenger tournament and an opening-round exit in another event of this level, Jacob Fearnley clinched a straight-set win over him in the first round of the French Open.

Wawrinka produced his best performance of this season when he progressed to the third round of the Australian Open after battling past Laslo Djere in four sets and Arthur Gea in five sets. In the third round, ninth seed Taylor Fritz overcame him in four sets.
