Anyone else in Mike Tomlin’s situation would be defensive when asked about their future in the NFL. Not Tomlin. Throughout his long career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tomlin has effectively faced a variety of challenges. Above all, even a powerful monarch loses strength at some time, but Tomlin’s spirits haven’t been dampened by fear in the least.
Even after experiencing a dry playoff spell that stretches back to the 2016 season. Tomlin turned to a veteran quarterback in hopes of fixing the issue, but it just didn’t pan out. The result remained the same at the end of the 2024 season, and the Steelers’ search for a playoff win raged on.
In the meantime, question marks were raised about his leadership capabilities. He was accused of refusing to relinquish his primitive ideologies in the modern era of football. Art Rooney, the Steelers owner, on the other hand, kept his faith in a coach who had never recorded a losing season.
Of course, silverware is the key to running a successful business, an achievement that has eluded the franchise since 2008. Tomlin remained steadfast in his approach and surrounded himself with veteran presence at the start of the 2025-26 NFL season.
Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling joined to make the Steelers’ dream a reality: winning the coveted seventh ring. A 6-6 record midway through the year failed to generate excitement in the Steel City. However, it provided more juice to the section that wants to see a new face at the head coaching position.
Even a win against eternal rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, wasn’t enough to shut the naysayers up. Tomlin is unbothered by all the talk. From his perspective, Tomlin has faced criticism ever since he accepted the Steelers’ job.
Man, I’ve been in the hot seat for 19 years. I always feel like I got something to prove. Not necessarily to anyone in particular, but that’s just the spirit in which I go about what I do professionally.
Mike Tomlin told the reporters on Tuesday
I asked Mike Tomlin if he felt like he was in the hot seat last week.

The season’s not over yet. As a matter of fact, the Steelers still hold the cards to secure a first conference title since 2020.
On an even bigger note, after 14 weeks of football, the Steelers are the fourth seed with a 7-6 record. Up next, the Steelers play the 6-7 Miami Dolphins, a team on a four-game winning streak.
Insider provided details on Mike Tomlin’s contract with the Steelers
ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in a recent report, stated that the Steelers have no intention of firing Tomlin right now or anytime soon. The owners will think about it during the 2026 offseason.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shares a similar view, citing the specifics of Tomlin’s contract, which got a generous update in 2024. It states that Tomlin is safe until the end of the 2026 season, and they also hold the power to extend it by one more year.
Do I expect anything to happen? No, I don’t. But I’ve always said Mike Tomlin will be gone when Mike Tomlin decides he’s had enough. I don’t see the Steelers making any move in that regard unless the complete bottom would fall out. And I don’t see that happening.
Gerry Dulac told Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot
Dulac’s colleague, Brian Batko, noted that Tomlin can say he “has been in the hot seat for 19 years” because he knows that his job is secured regardless of the outside chatter.

It’s not easy to fire a coach with Tomlin’s pedigree. He is among the few who boast a positive win record of .626. The Steelers at least know what they are getting from Tomlin, so he’s their best bet to win a Super Bowl for the time being.
