All eyes have been on Justin Fields and what sort of a role he would play during his first season at the Pittsburgh Steelers. His quarterback partner Russell Wilson provided a positive hint that should excite the Steelers nation.
Seniority and experience matter when it comes to quarterback spot, and Wilson has way more compared to Fields. Head coach Mike Tomlin has hinted that the Super Bowl winner will be their starting under-center in 2024. Yet, the Steelers will decide after the offseason training camp concludes.
Wilson welcomed Fields with open arms and training side by side for the past month the 36-year-old realized the Ohio State graduates’ potential.
Justin [Fields] is [obviously] one of the most talented guys in the NFL. You know all the things he can do. The player, the quarterback that he is. He's dynamic. It's all about us winning. That's the focus. I think it would strike fear in some defenses, that's for sure.Russell Wilson told Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Press Review
Fields is one of the few quarterbacks in the NFL that can act like a running back. He has the pace and the presence of mind to slither away from sticky situations. It’s because of this talent that many perceived he could work as a kick and a punt returner while sharing a few snaps with Wilson. However, the 25-year-old has no intention of assuming such a role to accumulate game time.

NFL writer predicts the Steelers will bench Russell Wilson for Justin Fields
Earlier this week Fields said he was open for a Kordell Stewart-type “slash” role and aimed to give Wilson a run for his money. So far the Steelers haven’t implemented any gadget plays as new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith gets the hang of it.
Wilson said that Fields was the right quarterback who fit into Smith’s more. He further added that the former Chicago Bears standout is a franchise quarterback.
So the question arises: where is Wilson in all of this? Turns out that NFL writer Judy Battista prophesied that the Steelers will start the season with the 9-time Pro Bowler, eventually benching him midway.
Arthur Smith is an experienced and successful offensive coordinator, but any struggle by Wilson. Playing against the defenses in the AFC North gives quarterbacks plenty of chances to struggle [and] will open the door to Fields.Judy Battista wrote
The Steelers are paying Russell Wilson a little more than $1 million while the Broncos are paying the remaining $39 million. So they don’t have the headache of playing him in every single game. They can easily think about the future and start Fields.
