Tennis legend Stefan Edberg recalls the fundamentals required to transform Roger Federer‘s game. The Swedish icon became Federer’s coach in December 2013 as he looked to resurrect his game.
Federer was coached by Paul Annacone between July 2010 and October 2013. However, poor results in the second half of 2013 led to a split between the two parties. Edberg said on Tennis Channel:
I think, first of all, he needed to make some changes. He was aware that he had to change some things. He changed his racket, which was important, to a more modern racket. I thought he needed to play a bit more offensively, perhaps move a little further up the court and take control of the points because it is difficult to beat Rafa and Novak from the baseline. I think he needed a bit of inspiration, a small change, and he is always looking to make changes to adapt to his game. Perhaps I was the right person at the right time.
Federer’s results improved significantly under Edberg between 2014 and 2015. Although he didn’t win any Grand Slams, he made 3 Grand Slam finals and 2 Year-End Championships Finals, losing all to Novak Djokovic.
Federer also added 3 Masters 1000 titles to his trophy cabinet. Although the Grand Slams didn’t come, the game was resurrected to eventually win the Grand Slams under Ivan Ljubicic.
Stefan Edberg reveals the idea behind Roger Federer’s SABR
Stefan Edberg brings back the memories of Roger Federer’s iconic Sneak Attack By Roger (SABR) shot. The Swedish legend has said that he had nothing to do with this shot.
Let’s be clear: I had nothing to do with the SABR. I was as surprised as anyone when I saw him play it in Cincinnati. I think it was something fun he did in practice, and suddenly, I was watching the match at home and thought, ‘What is happening here?’. But it was fantastic that it happened because it was talked about for a long time and was something new for tennis. It was great to see, but as I said, I had nothing to do with that. It was entirely his doing.

Federer brought the SABR shot in 2015 at Cincinnati. That shot surprised everyone: he charged forward towards the service line while the opponent tossed the ball up.
This shot was fundamental to his Cincinnati Open title win, in which he beat Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. He also played that shot during the US Open, where he made the final.
Roger Federer’s Hall of Fame Status Confirmed
Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer continues to be regarded by many tennis fans as the greatest player of all time, especially following his recent appearance at the US Open and induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. However, the GOAT debate remains complicated because Novak Djokovic has stronger statistical claims, including more Grand Slam titles, more weeks as world No. 1, and more ATP Masters 1000 victories.

Federer’s journey to the top was not immediate. After struggling to progress beyond the quarter-finals at Grand Slam tournaments during his first five years, he finally broke through by winning Wimbledon. He then dominated men’s tennis, winning 11 Grand Slam titles in four years and becoming one of the sport’s biggest stars.
A major part of Federer’s legacy is his enormous global popularity. Rafael Nadal and Djokovic developed their own huge fan bases and achieved remarkable records, but Federer’s elegant style and personality created a unique connection with millions of fans. Djokovic himself has acknowledged that he arrived after Federer and Nadal had already captured much of the tennis audience.
Ultimately, the article argues that while Djokovic and Nadal have stronger arguments based on achievements and statistics, Federer possesses something numbers cannot fully measure. His grace, influence, and enduring popularity have given him a special place in tennis history, which is why many fans will continue to consider him the true GOAT despite the statistical case for Djokovic.
