Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed that social media is part of the reason he’s having a rough patch on tour this season. The Greek star has decided to unfollow all the accounts he follows on social media as he aims to be focused on his goal of building back his confidence on the court before the season ends.

The former World No.3, two-time Monte Carlo Masters winner, and French Open finalist, has struggled on the court this season. The 27-year-old has failed to win more than two matches in a tournament since the Barcelona Open in April. In fact, he has not reached the quarter-finals of a tournament since the Monte Carlo Masters.

After losing to Matteo Gigante in four sets, he suffered a second-round exit at the French Open. At the Wimbledon Championships, he suffered a back injury that forced him to retire in the first round of the tournament. Within that period, he had an issue with coach Goran Ivanisevic, which led to him parting ways with the former Wimbledon champion.

Tsitsipas then reunited with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, as he hoped to bounce back from his slump. But, it continued. He managed to win just two matches in four tournaments during the North American hard-court swing. Also, that saw him drop to World No.27 in the ATP rankings with a 21-17 win-loss record this season.

He’s currently in Athens, where he will compete at the Davis Cup qualifier between Greece and Brazil. In an interview with Sky Sports, he revealed that he has set a goal not to use social media for three to four years. He added that he has also informed his team to help him bring discipline to his off-court activities:

I release all the stress by going on social media and watching videos for hours, because I like them. I realised that it would do me good if I set myself the goal for the next one, two, three years or even more, of not using social media. I talked to the team that helps me with social media and I chose to stop following all the people I followed on social media. It’s not about the people I followed, but rather the fact that I want to become independent of social media.

Tsitsipas’ only title this season came at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. The tournament was expected to be a springboard for good things to come as it was his maiden ATP 500 crown, but he has not reached the semi-finals of a tournament since then.

Stefanos Tsitsipas reveals why he struggled on the court during the 2025 US Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas returned to the tour at the Canadian Open after sustaining a back injury at the Wimbledon Championships. After winning just one match in two events, he got a wildcard to compete at the Winston-Salem Open ahead of the US Open. There, he crashed out in his opening match.

At the US Open, he won his first round match but lost to Daniel Altmaier in a dramatic five-set match in the second round of the US Open. He revealed during his interview with Greek outlet Sdna that anxiety and stress played a major role in his second-round defeat at the US Open. He added that he struggled with a back injury at the US Open:

Anxiety and stress played a role in the injury coming back. The strangest thing is that I trained before entering my first match at the US Open and I felt amazing, perfect. We all feel anxious and it does not help that I have not won many matches lately. So I entered the match and immediately started to feel what I had been feeling for so long.

Tsitsipas is expected to compete at the Japan Open, where he will kick off his Asian swing. He competed at the ATP 500 event last year, losing to Alex Michelsen in the round of 32. The 27-year-old will hope to perform better at the tournament, which precedes the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
