Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas will no longer be coached by his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas. This comes after the former World No.3 called out his dad following his disappointing exit from the Canadian Open.
Tsitsipas was up against Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the second round and lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. After the match, he ranted against his father for not listening to him and a day later, he ended the partnership, announcing the same in a long post on X he wrote in Greek on August 9.
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my collaboration with my father as a coach has come to an end. I prefer to keep my father in his role as a father, and only as a father.Stefanos Tsitsipas wrote on X
The 25-year-old added that he felt it wrong to talk to his dad in that way and claimed that even though he is an “introvert“, considers himself patient and usually doesn’t react, sometimes he reaches a “bursting point.“
When I feel disrespected, judged, or emotionally attacked, I tend to lose control of what comes out of my mouth, which goes against my values as a human being.Stefanos Tsitsipas added
He also lauded his father for raising him “the right way” and thanked him for his sacrifices. Apostolos would continue to travel with his son and give him the assistance that he might need.

Here’s what Stefanos Tsitsipas actually said about his dad during the Canadian Open
During the first set of his match against Kei Nishikori, a frustrated Stefanos Tsitsipas yelled at his father, asking him to leave the court, which the latter did. Then at the press conference, Tsitsipas explained how an ATP 1000 Masters event is important to him, but as his father was not listening to him and not taking the feedback from Tsitsipas as a player, it angered the tennis star.
My father hasn't been very smart or very good at handling those situations, it's not the first time he has done that. I'm really disappointed at him.Stefanos Tsitsipas said at the press conference
It was the second time Tsitsipas parted ways with his father, as it happened for the first time in 2023. The Canadian Open second round was Tsitsipas’ first match after his Olympic campaign in Paris. Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinal where eventual champion Novak Djokovic beat him in straight sets.
