Stefanos Tsitsipas is in Almaty, competing in an ATP 250 tournament. Tsitsipas, who was tipped to become one of the players to lead the next generation after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, is just a shadow of his former self.

Tsitsipas last won multiple titles in a season in 2022, when he clinched the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Mallorca Open in seven finals. Then in 2023, he reached his career’s second Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, only to lose in straight sets to Djokovic.

In recent years, Tsitsipas has only struggled due to form issues and a lingering back injury that even forced him to contemplate retirement during the 2025 season. He won the Dubai Tennis Championships last year and ended his title drought this season by defeating Raphael Collignon in the Swiss Open Gstaad final.

Since reaching the quarterfinals of the 2024 French Open, the Greek ace has failed to reach the last eight of any Grand Slam. Tsitsipas, however, still believes he can end his Major title drought.

I always look at it and view it, I have my own chapter, I have my own story. Their story is not my story, and my story is not their story. They have written their own story through the Tour and through the success that they have had. And maybe one way you could look at it. Yes, I’m stuck a little bit behind, but this is my story, and the story is not just results on their own and performance. It’s what you go through as well as a tennis player, because one day I can always use that to help the next generation of tennis players.

Stefanos Tsitsipas said at the Almaty Open (H/T: Tennis365)

This year in Majors, he reached the second round of the first three events. In the New York Slam, he lost to eventual runner-up Ben Shelton in the fourth round.

I look throughout my journey as pretty much like a learning curve, where it kind of goes up and down, and there are so many different variations of it. And I’ve had my fair share of success. I’ve had my fair share of victories and big wins. And every single day I have the chance to write to my story. I could maybe one day be a Grand Slam winner later in life, or not, but I’ve given it a try. I’ve tried all kinds of things to get there.

The Aussie first beat Miomir Kecmanovic, then overcame Luciano Darderi in the previous round. Tsitsipas will be facing Duckworth for the second time in his career. They first met in the round of 16 at the 2018 Citi Open, where Tsitsipas won.

Before Almaty, the two-time Grand Slam runner-up played the Shanghai Masters, where his run ended at the hands of Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round. Apart from the Almaty Open and the Swiss Open Gstaad, the only time Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinal this season was at the Qatar Open.

Tsitsipas has already reached one final in Almaty. In 2022, he lost the final to Novak Djokovic. Medvedev is competing as the defending champion in Almaty. He beat Corentin Moutet last year.
