“Stefanos has been experiencing foot problems, will miss the Davis Cup tie against Lithuania,” says father Apostolos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas

World No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas will not be featuring in his country’s Davis Cup tie against Lithuania with a persistent, foot injury. Therefore, Greece will miss its star player in the ongoing competition this weekend.

Although Tsitsipas did play the North American hard-court swing, along with the US Open 2021, father Apostolos opined that his son has been dealing with the foot injury for a considerable amount of time.

Speaking to the local media, tennisnews.gr, the senior Tsitsipas said, “This injury was present throughout the US tour, at the US Open, in Toronto, in Cincinnati and at the Olympics. Specialized measures were taken to deal with this problem, but it was considered necessary to rest (after the US Open) for two weeks. Stefanos came here with the belief that he will play, of course.”

Apostolos further opined that Stefanos has been trying hard to get onto the recovery mode, but is still far from attaining match fitness.

“Stefanos has been recovering all this time. Today he hit the field for half an hour, he tried things. He knows his body very well and I think he will make the decision, to say that he is ready to do what he needs to do the next two days.”

With the 23-year-old missing, his younger brother Petros Tsitsipas has been given the honour to represent his country in the Davis Cup.

Although Stefanos started the year on a positive note, and continued his dream run on the clay, by winning titles and reaching the finals of Roland Garros, he failed to impress at Wimbledon and the US Open.

After getting eliminated in the opening round at the All England Club by American Francis Tiafoe, the Greek sensation was dumped in the third round of the recently concluded US Open by Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

Going ahead, depending on the fitness levels of Tsitsipas, he is scheduled to play the 2021 Laver Cup in Boston, next weekend.
