Stefanos Tsitsipas and Greece crashed out of the United Cup after losing to defending champion USA in the quarter-finals. The tournament was Tsitsipas’ first event since September, as he returned to the tour this season after withdrawing from several tournaments due to a back injury.
Tsitsipas will hope to forget the 2025 season in a hurry, as he contemplated retiring from the sport amid his injury struggles. The Greek star was fine for the first six months of last year until the Wimbledon Championships, where he suffered a back injury during a practice session and was forced to retire from his opening match.
After that, he returned to the court but failed to win two consecutive matches as he was still battling with the injury. However, this season, he was determined to get his career back on track after dropping outside the Top 25 in the ATP rankings. The 27-year-old decided to play at the United Cup in Perth, Australia.
He finished the United Cup with an excellent singles record of 3-0 for his country. Tsitsipas’ crowning performance came in the opening match against the USA, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-5. The win was Tsitsipas’s first top-10 victory in more than 18 months. However, the Americans went on to clinch the win after winning the deciding mixed-doubles triumph.
Despite the defeat, Tsitsipas is proud of his performance at the tournament heading into the Australian Open. During an interview with ATP, he disclosed that he’s currently feeling good physically and he’s enjoying playing tennis without any annoying discomfort or stress on the court:
So far everything is good. It’s great feedback, knowing that sort of thing, knowing that I’m not feeling any aches or pains. I’m actually very pleased that I get to enjoy tennis daily, without any discomfort and pain that might be causing me more stress in everyday life… I’m super glad I get to play the sport that I love. Health is the most important thing in the world. I’m really truly enjoying every single match that I get to play pain-free.
After Tsitsipas defeated Fritz, he paired with Maria Sakkari in the mixed doubles clash against Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison. The Americans won the tie, beating Greece 2-1, with Sakkari having lost to Gauff in the women’s singles match. Team Greece will hope to build on their fine performance at the tournament next year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas pleased with his performance against Taylor Fritz at the United Cup
Stefanos Tsitsipas has now extended his record against Taylor Fritz to 4-2 following their sixth meeting at the United Cup. The former World No.3 gave his best performance against the American star, which earned him a straight-sets victory. It was a shocking victory for Tsitsipas, considering his form since last year.

During the aforementioned interview, he was asked how he felt after the victory. The former Australian Open finalist admitted he was pleased with the win against Fritz. He added that he challenged the former World No.4 on the court at the highest level:
Pleased with the win. It was not easy getting into the match. I’ve been absent for a long time and matches like this challenge you to the fullest. I feel like you really get tested in the most brutal and intense ways against players that have been very consistent in the past couple of months. Taylor is one of them. I was aware entering the court that my focus levels needed to be at their highest.
Tsitsipas is expected to be back on the court before heading for the Australian Open in Melbourne. He will feature in the Adelaide International, which kicks off on January 12, just six days before the Australian Open. He will use the ATP 250 tournament to gain full fitness and confidence before traveling for the first Grand Slam of 2026.
