Stefanos Tsitsipas will be meeting one of his fiercest rivals in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters on October 9. Daniil Medvedev will be his opponent against whom Tsitsipas was involved in a verbal altercation back in the 2018 Miami Open, which the Russian won in three sets.

It seems both the players have left behind the bitter past as Tsitsipas heaped massive praise on the Russian ahead of their clash on Court 3. Tsitsipas previously stated that such heated exchanges make tennis “more colorful” and exciting for the fans. But the Greek now wants to resolve his quarrels with players as he wants tennis to bring “peace instead of a war“.

I consider him someone that I respect on the tour, much more than I did before. We’ve had some heated things on the court in the past, but I think those things have resolved themselves over time, and obviously, we also had the time to speak about those things and have a common understanding of what these things happen.

Stefanos Tsitsipas said at the press conference

Tsitsipas defeated Alexandre Muller in straight sets in the third round to set up the clash with the fifth seed. Medvedev, on the other hand, knocked out Matteo Arnaldi. Prior to the Shanghai Masters, Tsitsipas participated in the Japan Open and lost in the first round to Alex Michelsen. Medvedev played at the China Open and made it to the semifinals, where eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz beat him in straight sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas claims Daniil Medvedev is a unique player

Stefanos Tsitsipas continued to laud Daniil Medvedev for his ‘unorthodox’ style of tennis. Tsitsipas admitted that though he said some mean things about Medvedev’s game in the past, he reflected a lot about it and found that he was wrong about it.

There are a lot of interesting things in his game that he brings that are very different from other players. I think that’s what makes him unique as a player because you don’t see players like him very often.

The 28-year-old has met Tsitsipas 13 times and leads 9-4 in their head-to-head meetings. They last met in Vienna in 2023 and Medvedev won that match in straight sets. Tsitsipas has won one title this season at the Monte-Carlo Masters, while the World No.5 is yet to clinch his first trophy.
