Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Andrey Rublev in the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday, to lift his first ATP 1000 title. The world number five had previously appeared in two Masters final, and ended up on the losing side on both occasions. However, he played some of his best tennis against Rublev, dropping just six games throughout the match.

The Greek considers this week as the best week of his life, as he claimed the title in Monte Carlo without dropping a single set. “I had an unbelievable week in Monte-Carlo,” Tsitsipas said in his post-match interview.

I can’t describe my feelings right now. I am overwhelmed by so many different emotions and nostalgia. It is incredible that I am able to be in the position that I am. We both deserved to be in the final. We put on an amazing fight and an amazing show… I would consider it as the [best] week of my life so far,” he added.

Stefanos Tsitsipas stated that it was a perfect start to his clay court season. The Greek is a good player on this surface, as was demonstrated by his success last season. He reached the semifinals of the French Open and also reached the finals of the Hamburg Open, where he lost to Andrey Rublev.

“The clay court season couldn’t have started better,” Tsitsipas said. “It is the best thing winning my first Masters 1000 and it is even more special doing it here on home soil in Monte-Carlo and doing it on clay, which is my favourite surface,” he added.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will now compete at the Barcelona Open 2021, where he enters as the second seed. He will hope to put up a strong show in Spain, and claim his second title in as many weeks.
