Stefanos Tsitsipas has been in a bit of a slump recently. But the top seed has now found his footing in Gstaad where he has reached the semifinals. He is yet to drop a set after two rounds in the tournament.
Getting back to the top would mean more encounters with the best in the world in upcoming tournaments. With Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner currently the three best-ranked players on the ATP tour, Tsitsipas asked for his view on who would be the biggest threat.
Speaking to the press, the Greek who fell out of the top ten post Wimbledon, said that Alcaraz is likely his biggest rival despite having played only six matches against him and losing all of them.
My biggest rival on the tour? I would probably say Carlos Alcaraz.
Stefanos Tsitsipas said at a press conference
Rivalries are not always as close as they seem and their magnitudes are usually determined by the interest they generate. The rivalry between Tsitsipas and Alcaraz can be likened to that between Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams or between Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini where the matches are always phenomenal but the results are mostly one-sided.
Stefanos Tsitsipas could re-enter Top 10 following Grigor Dimitrov’s injury
Grigor Dimitrov suffered a terrible fall in his fourth-round match against Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon, forcing him to retire. His return to the tour has not yet been confirmed and the World No. 10 is currently tied with Taylor Fritz (World No. 11) in ranking points.
Neither Dimitrov nor Fritz is playing any tournaments this week, which gives them no chance of climbing the rankings ladder. Tsitsipas, meanwhile, is creeping in on them as he trails the pair by just 65 points. A win in his semifinal match at Gstaad will give the Greek player 75 additional points which will propel him back into the Top 10, replacing Dimitrov.
If Tsitsipas manages to win the title, he will overtake Andrey Rublev to occupy the ninth position on the rankings charts.
