The outcome of the matchup between the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills carries significant implications. After losing their way in the midpoint of the season, Josh Allen and the Bills returned to winning in the last two games. The Patriots also have something to prove when they face the Bills, especially Stefon Diggs.
Their once great friendship came to an unfortunate end following a fallout in 2023. Diggs left the Bills and arrived in New England via. Houston. As both teams are part of the AFC East, they get to settle the score twice a year.
Diggs won the bragging rights after the Patriots won 23-20 in week 8. Very few would have pegged them to go on a winning run, let alone sit at the top of the AFC with an 11-2 record.
On Sunday, Gillette Stadium in Boston will witness the reverse fixture. According to sports betting websites, Allen and the Bills are slight favorites to defeat the Patriots. However, Stephen A. Smith isn’t willing to count the Patriots out just yet.
Speaking on a recent segment of First Take, Smith noted that the presence of Stefon Diggs could prove to be the x-factor for the Patriots. Smith said:
I will say this about Buffalo: Should the Bills be favored on the road? [Initially] I was inclined to say yes, because of Josh Allen, and then I remembered something.12 targets, 10 receptions, 146 yards receiving, Stefon Diggs, former Buffalo Bill, now in New England … Nah, I can’t put the Buffalo Bills as the favorites in this one [against the Patriots].

Diggs had one of the best outings in a Patriots jersey while facing the Bills. The Pro Bowl wide receiver caught 10 passes from Drake Maye for 146 yards (14.6 yards per catch). Meanwhile, Allen completed 22 passes from 31 attempts (70%) for 253 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also added 53 yards on the ground from 9 carries.
Josh Allen was selected as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week
Allen goes into the Patriots game on the back of a record-breaking outing against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 29-year-old contributed not just with his hands, but also put his feet to good use.

Allen threw 22 completions from 28 pass attempts for 251 yards (78%), 3 passing touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He further carried the ball 9 times for 78 yards and scored 1 rushing touchdown. After 13 games, Allen sits on 265 completions from 378 pass attempts (70.1%) for 3083 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, along with 487 yards on the ground and 12 rushing scores.
At this rate, Allen will cross last year’s total, which led to him winning his first NFL MVP title. That might be so, but currently, he’s not included in the three-man race for the 2025 MVP. Those spots are taken by Maye, the Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford, and the Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love.
He could easily get back in the race by ending the Patriots’ ten-game winning streak. Allen boasts a solid record against the Patriots. He has a passer rating of 85.3 with 2,829 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 14 games against the Patriots. Danny Parkins on FS1’s First Things First picked the Bills to win if Allen has a repeat of the Bengals game:
Josh Allen might have to be Superman in order to beat the Patriots and going forward. Not a problem… No defense, no problem for Superman.
