After months of struggle, the contract talk between quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys has resumed as the franchise intends to secure him in a long-term contract. However, not everyone seems to be in favor of this move, including Stephen A. Smith as he bluntly claimed only winners reset the market.
When Prescott clinched the playoff berth with the NFC East title, he was anticipated to receive a lucrative extension. However, in the very first game as the quarterback crumbled, the whole team collapsed leading to the Cowboys’ poor elimination. This brought Prescott’s performance under intense scrutiny, and many argued he didn’t have what it takes to be a winner.
With the belief in that notion, sports analyst Smith questioned how the Cowboys prioritize Prscott’s second extension when two of their star players Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb are seeking their first NFL extension. He argued that the three-time Pro Bowler’s contract should be at the lowest in the Cowboys’ list of priorities, on the recent episode of First Take.
Dak Prescott? 60 million dollars? That's my last priority. He is the last priority on the list. I want that man to come to the negotiating table, sticking out his chest, acting like this is what he deserves. 'Well, the market says this, and I'm this, and I'm that.' Yeah, until January rolls around.said Stephen A. Smith
In the drought of nearly three decades, the Cowboys have had many postseason collapses but none hit as hard as last year’s. They entered the playoffs as the second-seeded team in the NFC and faced the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round, that too in their home stadium where they experienced zero losses. But the two interceptions by Prescott turned out quite hefty for the Cowboys.
Does Dak Prescott deserve a market-resetting extension?
While talking about why Prescott’s contract shouldn’t be a priority, Smith also highlighted why the quarterback doesn’t deserve a market-resetting extension. In his eight years with the franchise, Prescott got two playoff victories and never succeeded in the conference championship.
He has never been to a Super Bowl. ... I would give anything to be in Jerry Jones chair on that negotiation.added Stephen A. Smith
Despite being the starting quarterback for eight whole years, Prescott didn’t accomplish any remarkable feats that justify him deserving a market-resetting deal. Meanwhile, the star wide receiver Lamb’s contract situation has reached an alarming stage where he repeatedly skipped the team’s mandatory training camp.
