Stephen A. Smith is no stranger to committing faux pas. The ESPN headliner has built his career on being loud, opinionated, and often wrong about a lot of things. His visibility and his unabashed takes have led him to become a prominent feature of pop culture discussions. His advent has led sports media away from news and put it into the realm of clickbaiting people and discussing things with less depth than ever.

Yet, Stephen A. Smith, up until recently, could always be trusted to give you the unfiltered truth about the state of politics in the USA. The First Take analyst was a sure shot always to call out wrongdoings by the federal government. But he belied this trend on the latest hot topic of the day. The FBI released 11 hours of footage from outside Jeffrey Epstein’s cell at the New York Metropolitan Correctional Facility in 2019.

The footage has metadata still remaining on the original file, which signals that the video may have been distorted from its original form. This has led to mass unrest, and fingers are being pointed at the FBI and bureau chief Kash Patel, who had promised to release the Epstein files after being sworn in around six months ago. But it seems that this delicate matter isn’t something that Stephen A. Smith feels affected by.

Speaking on a News Nation segment on Friday evening, Smith had this to say about the public uproar around the tampered Epstein files:

You’re in an uproar off the Epstein list? That’s all you’ve got? It’s really really that this man is…of course I think there’s a list, but I don’t know. I suspect, but I have no knowledge, nor do I care this Friday night. I’m here to enjoy myself, I’m here to have a nice weekend. I could give a damn about the Epstein client list, it has no effect on me whatsoever. I have a life

That wasn’t all that Smith said. The ESPN analyst reiterated his point about it not affecting the general public’s life:

I do know this. In the grand scheme of things, it ain’t gonna affect the lives of over 2 to 300 million Americans. I think we’ll be just fine without knowing whether or not there was really, really a client list. I think we’ll be okay. It’s unbelievable that this is a big deal to me, it really is.

NBA fans tear into Stephen A. Smith for his insensitive words about the Epstein list

There are no two ways about this – unlike what Stephen A. Smith said, America does deeply care about the Epstein list. They have shown this in various forms on social media over the past six years and change since the sex trafficking ring run by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell became public knowledge.

It also helps to underpin the grotesque ways in which Epstein lobbied for the groups he represented by allegedly leveraging video footage.

People united in their disdain for Smith, unequivocally denouncing his tasteless comments about the burning issue:

Stephen A. Smith has had a lot of missteps and disasters in his media career. But this is undoubtedly his most deplorable statement that he’s ever made.
