Stephen A. Smith appears to have uncovered the rationale behind Donald Trump‘s attempt to halt the RFK Stadium plan unless the Washington Commanders changed their name back to ‘Redskins.’ This move appears to be tied to the President’s political strategy to maintain a favorable image among his supporters.

A day after Trump’s announcement, Stephen A. made a rare summer appearance on ESPN’s Get Up. He started off by calling the President ‘petty’ for his Redskins statement. It’s a significant move during a time when the country is in turmoil regarding the tariff bill and the string of deportations.

There are millions upon millions of people in the United States of America who are not necessarily happy with some of the things that he is doing, so what does he do? He caters to his base. By him bringing that issue up, we all know from a political standpoint, it’s much ado about nothing.

From Smith’s point of view, Trump wants to distract the population from the larger issues by introducing a new one that caters to his supporters, including the ‘Epstein files.’

A lot of people associated with the MAGA [right] want [Epstein] files released, and you even have Republican representatives on the Hill wanting those files [released], wanting to see for themselves because they’re not buying what the administration is saying.

For the longest period in football history, the Washington club had a name and logo representing Native Americans. Near the tail end of Dan Snyder’s tenure as owner, DC locals and a large section of the fanbase wanted a name change because the ‘Redskins’ sounded derogatory.

Snyder conducted a nationwide poll and settled on the Commanders as the franchise’s name. Trump views it differently. The ‘Redskins’ name is not a backward or bad term; rather, it’s an honorable moniker.

Trump wants the current Washington football team owners to change back to it; otherwise, he will stop the RFK Stadium plans.

Stephen A. Smith wants the Commanders to share a stadium with the Baltimore Ravens

Smith proposed a solution that will kill two birds with one stone. He suggested that the Commanders should use the same stadium as the Baltimore Ravens. Why? Because of their proximity.

It’s common in New York, where Smith hails from. Both the Jets and the Giants agreed to play at MetLife Stadium in the early 1980s, and more recently, the Chargers and the Rams play their games at SoFi Stadium in downtown Los Angeles.

I’ve always wanted a stadium in the state of Maryland that the Ravens and the Washington Commanders could share with a lot of employment emanating from DC.

The proposal has its merits. However, it’s likely that Smith either didn’t consider or failed to investigate the fact that the Ravens are currently renovating their own stadium. More importantly, Commanders and Ravens fans don’t like each other, even though it’s only a one-hour drive from one stadium to another.

These two teams will play against each other in the final preseason game at Landover.

Both had moderate success last season. Rookie Jayden Daniels led the Commanders to their first NFC title game since the early 1990s and finished as the offensive rookie of the campaign. The Ravens, on the other hand, crashed out against the Bills in the divisional round.
