Pete Alonso sent shockwaves across the MLB world on Wednesday when he joined the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million deal. While reacting to this, sportscaster Stephen A. Smith unloaded on the New York Mets. During this, he made an error leading to MLB fans trolling him.
Alonso, who joined the Mets through the draft in 2016, made his debut for the team on Opening Day in 2019. He went on to have an incredible rookie season, as he finished with 53 home runs and 120 RBIs while batting with a .260 average. This performance saw him become an instant fan favorite and win the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2019.
The “Polar Bear” continued to rake in the following years. After becoming a free agent in the 2024 offseason, he re-signed with the Mets on a 2-year, $54 million deal. It did have an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.
In the 2025 season, the first baseman etched his name in history. In August, he broke the record of Darryl Strawberry and became the home run king of the Mets. He finished the year with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs.
Despite these numbers from him, the Mets had a disappointing campaign. The team collapsed in the second half of the season and finished the year with an 83-79 record and missed the playoffs on the final day.
Following the 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins, Alonso announced his decision to opt out of his deal and become a free agent again this offseason.
As per reports, Alonso met with teams during the Winter Meetings. He would then agree to join the Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million deal and bring an end to his tenure with the Mets.

Stephen A. Smith was one of the sportscasters who reacted to this deal. At the Stephen A. Smith Show, the 58-year-old would present the stats of Alonso year by year. During this, he made a slight mistake.
He would refer to the fact that Alonso played in only 57 games during the 2020 season and got injured. For the unversed, there were only 60 regular season games that year as it was a COVID-19 shortened season.
Stephen A Smith said Pete Alonso "got hurt and only played in 57 games his 2nd season", when really it was the 60 game shortened COVID season 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/0IDiQKiS1x

In 239 plate appearances that year, Alonso hit 16 home runs and 35 RBIs. Meanwhile, the Mets finished last in the National League East standings that season with a 26-34 record.

Speaking of Alonso, his new deal is the biggest Annual Average Value (AAV) given to a first baseman. It is also the highest AAV in Orioles history and the second-largest deal offered by them to a player since they splashed the cash on Chris Davis and gave him a 7-year, $161 million deal in 2016.
Stephen A. Smith unloaded on Mets after Pete Alonso’s exit
Just a day after losing closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets suffered another huge blow as they lost Pete Alonso. Stephen A. Smith was among those who unloaded on the team and slammed them.

As per MLB insider Anthony DiComo, the Mets never made an official offer to Alonso this year. The team did not participate in his sweepstakes once they realized the bidding was going somewhere they did not want to go.
As for Diaz, the team did lay out a 3-year, $66 million deal for him. However, the pitcher chose the $69 million deal with the Dodgers and joined the two-time defending champions instead of returning to the Mets.
On his show, Stephen A. Smith blasted team owner Steve Cohen and General Manager David Stearns.
You let Pete Alonso, who smacked 38 home runs for you last season, 126 RBIs, batted .272… He played in all 162 games for the second consecutive season, and it was the third time in the last four years that he has played 160 games at least, for you, and this is the dude you let get away to the Baltimore Orioles? This is very, very, very bad for the New York Mets.
Stephen A. Smith said on his show
A few hours after Alonso’s deal, Steve Cohen sent out a message to the fans. The Mets owner reassured them and expressed that there was still plenty of time left in the offseason to build a championship-winning team.
