The quarterback, who was first in line to earn a contract extension for leading the Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs as the second-seeded in the conference, has been questioning his position on the roster, following the coming 2024 season. Dak Prescott has been facing intense scrutiny over his agonizing performance in the wild-card round game that got the team eliminated last season, having his potential extension on the line.

Considering owner Jerry Jones’ ambiguity regarding the contract extension of his star players, especially Prescott, there have been several debates on whether or not he should be given an extension. While many believe the signal-caller earned the extension and may exceed $60 million per year, Stephen A. Smith asserted he shouldn’t get one during the latest edition of First Take.

I don’t think they should. Dak Prescott hasn’t proven that he earned over the $60 million he inevitably is going to get. The man has two playoff victories in eight years and my mentality is at some point in time, the result should matter. And the fact is, when it counts most, Dak Prescott has been a virtual no-show.
Stephen A. Smith asserted when asked if the Cowboys should sign Prescott in an extension before the coming 2024 season

The sports analyst argued that the Cowboys are stuck in the contract situation of Prescott, since there is no clause of franchise tag or trade deal available in the three-time Pro Bowler’s contract. From a business perspective, he would understand if the team offers an extension to the quarterback, but Smith stands firm with his argument from a strict player on the field.

Dak Prescott confident in ongoing contract negotiations

If the Cowboys didn’t actually sign an extension, then Prescott will undeniably enter the free agency market where his value is anticipated to rise beyond $60 million per year. And considering everything happening around him, he is also open to exploring his other options, regardless of his desire to stay in Dallas– the “America’s team.”

I enjoy being a Cowboy, one thousand percent. I enjoy living in Dallas. I enjoy everything about it. But this is a business. Conversations are going well. But I’m thankful to be where I am right now

While the quarterback left the contract negotiation part to his agent and the Cowboys front office, they are confident that a deal is in process. Meanwhile, he directs all his focus toward football and prepares himself for the opening week game against the Cleveland Browns on September 8.
