The Dallas Cowboys have a lot on their plate—from pending contract extensions to fans waiting for a Super Bowl for years. They can ease some of the pressure by doing a deep playoff run, but Stephen A. Smith doesn’t believe Jerry Jones’ lack of investment will deter them from back-to-back post-season football.
During Friday’s episode of First Take on ESPN, Smith, Mad Dog Chris Russo, and Bart Scott argued about which team would win the NFC East and make it into the playoffs. They showed concern for the Cowboys, whose failure to make good use of the free agency has left them shorthanded in some areas.
I don’t think you can guarantee that they (Cowboys) are a playoff team.
Stephen A. Smith said
In his view, the Philadelphia Eagles look like the more balanced team in the NFC East. He also mentioned the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers from the NFC North, the Atlanta Falcons from the NFC South, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Los Angeles Rams from the NFC West will be in the playoffs.
However, it makes six teams, which means there’s still a long shot for the Cowboys to sneak through behind the Eagles, which his colleague Louis Riddick would not appreciate.
Yet, the veteran sports analyst reiterated that Jerry Jones’ team will not play post-season ball in early 2025.

Which areas are the Dallas Cowboys’ weak points, according to Stephen A. Smith?
The Cowboys have several positions that are occupied mostly by rookies or second-years. Namely, the wide receiver room, but even their best player, CeeDee Lamb, refuses to show up to team practice because he wants a new deal.
Yes, you have CeeDee Lamb. Who's your No. 2? Brandin Cooks. Alright, that's fine. Who are your number three receivers, and what have you? A bunch of dudes named Jaylen [Brooks] whose last names we can't remember.Stephen A. Smith said
The Cowboys let Brandin Cooks and running back Tyler Boyd leave and brought back Ezekiel Elliott from New England. However, Smith argued the all-pro rusher isn’t the same as he used to be in his first spell with the team.
This isn't the Ezekiel Elliott from years ago. We don't know if he's that dude any longer. When other teams were making moves, the Dallas Cowboys didn't.Stephen A. Smith said
The Cowboys also lost veteran Pro Bowl corner Stephon Gilmore, who joined the Minnesota Vikings. On top of that, if Lamb forces a move away, then it will be even more troublesome for the Cowboys, and next year quarterback Dak Prescott and edge rusher Micah Parsons’ contracts are up as well.
Smith does bring up valid points, but then again, the Cowboys are the defending NFC East champions. They will start their season on the road against the Cleveland Browns.
