New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is only in his second season in the league, and already, he has become a much-talked-about topic on major sports shows, including Stephen A. Smith‘s First Take.
The reason is that the Patriots have climbed to the top of the league’s leaderboard, and only trail the Denver Broncos, who have posted a similar 9-2 run, due to their worse home record.
At just 23 years old, the North Carolina alum has displayed maturity and awareness that is rare in quarterbacks who have just one full season to show on their resumes.
Despite that, former league MVP Cam Newton claimed that he believes the Patriots’ quarterback is ‘fool’s gold’. While speaking with reporters, Maye was asked about that remark.
He replied, suggesting that he did not know what show Newton was, and that he felt former players were paid to pass such comments to boost ratings. This came to the attention of the panel of First Take, where show host Stephen A. Smith said this:
He is also a liar… First Take is the number one morning show, 13 years and counting… Don’t tell me you an athlete and you don’t know that. Don’t tell me you an athlete and you don’t know that Cam Newton is on this show. You’re lying.
"[Drake Maye] is a liar…First Take is the number one morning show..don’t tell me you a athlete and you don’t know that. Don’t tell me you a athlete and you don’t know that Cam Newton is on this show. You lying." – Stephen A. Smith pic.twitter.com/kaxxptSMpY

The 58-year-old analyst believes almost every top athlete who retires from a sport is courted by networks to share their expertise on television. He felt Maye was lying after facing criticism from someone as accomplished as Newton, who was also on the best morning debate show.
Fans tear Stephen A. Smith for berating Drake Maye with his ego
Fans watching this entire situation unfold knew that Cam Newton might not have been wrong in erring caution to those betting heavily on Drake Maye and the New England Patriots. However, for Stephen A. Smith to lash out at Maye is what fans believe was uncalled for. For starters, they believe the $100 million analyst proved that his ego was bigger than star athletes.
They wondered if, in this day and age of social media, was it expected of a 23-year-old to watch cable? Fans believe Smith has lost touch with reality, especially since the success of his show has clouded his mind. Check out examples of those reactions below:
This is a straight up clown show, and all 3 look the part 😭

Yo steve, he doesn’t know what network you’re on either, and he said he didn’t care.

It’s just wild, we’ve gotten to a point where the people talking about the sports think that they are the main storyline.

Does Maye even have cable? 😆

I don't think Stephan A. Smith truly comprehends how fragmented the sports entertainment market has become. Being No. 1 in a space no longer means you're culturally relevant on a national scale, it just means you have a bigger piece of pie than anybody else at the dessert table.

lol @DrakeMaye2 is definitely at practice when first take is on. Most athletes I’ve worked with never watch the show they just see when they get tagged on social media

Stephen A throwing a tantrum because a 22-yr-old QB doesn't watch his show is PEAK ESPN fragility 😂🤡

Who's "in their feelings" again?

Drake Maye’s reply in that manner was classic deflective behavior that athletes resort to. Fans believe there was no need to address that. Instead, Stephen A. Smith could have shut him down with a different rhetoric.
Drake Maye lauds Stefon Diggs for being his ‘glue’ receiver
Other than replying to Cam Newton’s comments, Drake Maye was also asked about his star receiver, Stefon Diggs. While discussing playing through injury, the QB ended up praising his first option pass catcher.

He’s awesome… he’s got great hands. One of the best hands I’ve seen. He’s effortless catching it… When the lights are on, he’s got some of the best hands in the league.
Drake Maye told reporters
Drake Maye when asked what he thought about Stefon Diggs playing through what the receiver called a broken finger:

“Stef’s probably dramatic. Every time he gets hit, he lays on the ground and acts like he just got hit by an 18-wheeler or something, so – no, he’s awesome… 😂… pic.twitter.com/lufwNQliIh
It seems the UNC alum is enjoying his time with the 4-time Pro Bowler, who happens to have some of the best hands in the league, which in turn has helped the quarterback enter MVP conversations.
