Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott became subject to intense scrutiny after his team suffered a 23-20 loss at the hands of conference rivals, Houston Texans. Though a loss cannot entirely be blamed on an individual, fans and many analysts seem to believe it was the poor management by the head coach that resulted in the defeat.

In the recent episode of ESPN’s First Take, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith enlisted himself among those critics and didn’t hold back from criticizing McDermott brutally for the 23-20 loss, which could have resulted in the Bills’ favor if only they had made the right calls. Smith slammed the Bills head coach for making “idiotic” calls during the Sunday Night Football game.

I tried to give Sean McDermott a pass and my god! How idiotic can you be as a coach to know that you gotta run with the ball and you gotta throw a football— not one, not two but three times. The only thing he did right yesterday was call his own damn self out.

Stephen A. Smith remarked

While criticizing McDermott, Smith clarified that he isn’t “being ultra-critical” of him and demanding the Bills to fire their head coach, unlike the fans. But he also comprehended the emotions of the fans, saying the “coach didn’t do any favor” for himself on Sunday.

Josh Allen struggles as Bills suffer second consecutive loss

The ESPN analyst referenced the play which clearly showed the wrong call made by McDermott when he expected quarterback Josh Allen to turn around the game by putting him in an uncomfortable position for a touchdown. As a result, he threw three straight incomplete passes in the final 32 seconds of the game.

McDermott, who took the entire blame on himself, tried explaining his decision in the post-game press conference and shared that he loves “Josh with the ball in his hands,” but he eventually learned that having an “efficient offense” was the right approach. Despite the poor loss, McDermott claimed taking this as a lesson for future.

In the second consecutive loss, quarterback Allen completed nine out of his 30 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. While the Texans have improved to 4-1, the Bills have sunk to 3-2 season standing and are up against the New York Jets next week.
