After giving broadcasting a shot for a year, Bill Belichick wanted to return to coaching and after UNC offered it, he grabbed it. While the legendary NFL head coaching awaits Tar Heels to finalize the deal, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith gave his brutal views on the subject, calling the job beneath Belichick.
Since his departure from the New England Patriots, the 72-year-old coach struggled a lot to find another coaching job before he redirected and entered broadcasting. Given that the odds of receiving a coaching job in the NFL remain low, Belichick did not let go of the huge offer received by North Carolina.
However, not everyone believes it’s the place Belichick should join after his legendary 24-year stint with the Patriots. One such individual is Smith, who did not shy away from giving his two cents on Belichick about to join college coaching in North Carolina.
“I want to say this respectfully, I think that [job] is beneath him,” asserted Smith on ESPN’s First Take.

The ESPN analyst also raised doubts about Belichick’s ability to deal with the complexities of college football, given he already had a “hard time dealing with media” during his time in the NFL.
Before concluding his opinion on why college football and Belichick are not a good combination, Smith threw in the names of the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys as potential landing spots for Belichick if he decides to stay in the NFL.
Bill Belichick insists on major changes for UNC football program
Amid all the chatters, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach hasn’t yet officially signed with the North Carolina Tar Heels. During his appearance on the Pat McAfee show, he claimed if he were to consider UNC, he would want them to be an NFL program.
This means, his contract would include the responsibilities that the veteran head coach seeks to make UNC an NFL program. From full access to payment plans to staffing decisions, Belichick intends to implement an ‘organization bible’ which has raised certain concerns among the UNC’s group of trustees.
