The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been a conference contender in nearly thirty years, but hey, George Pickens still thought they were synonymous with Super Bowls. The former Pittsburgh Steelers wideout has been taking indirect jibes at his former team after he shifted bases in the offseason from the Steel City to play for America’s Team.

Jon Machota recently reported that George Pickens has been singing praises of his new team on 105.3 The Fan. Pickens made a bold claim, suggesting that the Cowboys are known for winning the Super Bowl and the buzzing energy in the city, and their desire to see the Cowboys in the Super Bowl once again.

I’ve been watching the Cowboys for years. I’ve always wanted to see them back in the Super Bowl. That’s why they’re so legendary, for that reason. The Cowboys, like I said, are known for the Super Bowl. If they weren’t known for that then no one would care about the Cowboys. They’re known for that and then the camaraderie of the people give that same energy, because they also want to see it again.

Well, Pickens had it partially true. The state of Texas has always been a very football-centric one, and the supporters of the Cowboys have waited more than three decades now. The question is whether it’s the energy is due to excitement or desperation. The other part, not so much, one has to give Jerry Jones the kudos for that. He’s been trying and has been successful at keeping the club relevant without actually winning.

Anyway, Stephen A. Smith is always keen to find his next target, and his ears landed on Pickens. On Tuesday’s edition of ESPN’s “First Take,” the lauded sportscaster called Pickens out for his statement:

Here’s the deal. George Pickens do you have any idea when you talk about Super Bowl and the Cowboys you do understand that the Steelers are a more successful franchise. Did you know that? Do you understand what the h*ll you’re saying…I’m sorry I got to call him out on that.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won two Super Bowls since the Cowboys won their last. The Steelers, in fact, have six Super Bowls, compared to the Cowboys’ five. The Cowboys made their last conference appearance in 1995, where they eventually became the champions defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have been to a conference championship seven times since, the most recent being in 2016.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are only better when compared to the Dallas Cowboys.

Stephen A. Smith’s whole monologue landed on many comparisons, including the prices of commodities in 1995 and now, as well as what music was playing. In a purely jab or a troll kind of way, it made sense. But, Smith most intentionally missed out on bringing out the Steelers’ factsheet.

If the Dallas Cowboys last made the Super Bowl thirty years ago, the Steelers made it fifteen years ago. The Steelers are only better when compared to the Cowboys. Sure, they have made it to the playoffs several times and maintained one of the most consistent records with a praiseworthy winning record streak.

When did they last win a playoff game? Well, counting that is almost requiring more than one’s fingers. They won their last playoff game on January 15, 2017, against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Arrowhead Stadium. The Steelers have played six games since then, all loses. This unfortunate streak started with the AFC loss in 2017 against the New England Patriots.

The Steelers might be looking forward to breaking that curse this year. But their new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, is not the best person to break unsavoury droughts.
