Stephen A. Smith is a true New Yorker. As much as he loves his hometown teams, he has never stopped talking about his favorite NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He knows his hometown’s New York Giants do not have much to excite him.
But Smith does have his eyes looking sideways at the New York Jets. Especially after Aaron Rodgers played a much better game on Thursday night.
On the latest edition of First Take, host Molly Qerim asked the panel what they made of the Jets win on Thursday Night Football. To this Stephen A. Smith gave his opinion.
Aaron Rodgers is a baaad man. The man showed up last night. If he looks like that, what does it do for the New York Jets? And I think it makes a Super Bowl contender.Stephen A. Smith said
To this, both Qerim and Shannon Sharpe looked stumped, but Smith continued.
If that Aaron Rodgers shows up, the New York Jets got a chance. There's a lot of question marks in the AFC and if anybody is qualified to exploit those question marks, it's Aaron Rodgers.Stephen A. Smith added
Smith pointed to the fact that the rest of the AFC have their own set of struggles. With the Jets starting to click this early, they are going to be a problem.
Last week, Stephen A. Smith had suggested that Aaron Rodgers needs to stop wearing the game manager cap he put on against the Tennessee Titans. Against the New England Patriots, he did just that as he torched them for 281 yards and two touchdowns.
But Shannon Sharpe and Molly Qerim reminded Smith that the Patriots are not a top tier team. Smith’s logic is based on the fact that the Jets defense did their job. But the offense, which was expected to be slow, starting to come into life, has given hope.
Aaron Rodgers and New York Jets have a favorable schedule compared to AFC rivals
Before this NFL season started, Pro Football Network ranked the New York Jets schedule as being easy. But three games in, and that ease seems to have moved up a notch. That is due to the impact other teams have had in those games. Some teams have had rude reality checks, while others have sprung a surprise leading to a completely different outlook.

In those situations, the New York Jets have an advantage. Every team they will face until the end of the regular season, do not pose a major challenge to them. Yes, and upset or two is possible, but as of now, all the rest of their opponents are trying to figure things out.
That gives Aaron Rodgers and the Jets a solid road to the playoffs. They can continue building on their offensive game while their defense continues to wreak havoc. Maybe Stephen A. Smith took a look at their schedule and came up with the Super Bowl theory.
