In Short
  • Stephen A. Smith criticized Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans, claiming he is more popular than the team.
  • The Pelicans responded with videos mocking Smith's athletic struggles, prompting him to warn of a response.
  • Fans reacted negatively to Smith's assertion that he is bigger than the Pelicans, a franchise valued at $3.55 billion.

Stephen A. Smith has again found himself in the crosshairs of the New Orleans Pelicans after the analyst rekindled his criticism about their leading star, Zion Williamson.

It all started when the latter revealed how ‘hurt’ he was when the ESPN analyst, along with Hall of Famers Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal, went about criticizing his eating habits when he was struggling with injuries.

This led Smith to talk about this segment on his show, First Take, where he again brought up how the former Duke star was a favorite among Louisiana-based chefs and cooks, and how he would ‘hide food under his bed.’

Seeing this unfold, the Pelicans were back to defend their star player and mocked the 58-year-old with videos about his struggles in basketball, boxing, and even his disastrous first pitch for his hometown New York Yankees. This irked Stephen A. Smith, who warned of a response.

I’m at the top of the heap in this profession. My popularity is more than anybody you got on your team outside of Zion Williamson… Nearly 65 games have been played, and you’re still searching for your 20th victory. Y’all are horrible… Y’all have been trash.

Stephen A. Smith said

In this nearly 12-minute rant, he boasted about earning a $100 million contract just because he is the best in his industry, and how, in comparison, the Pelicans are one of the worst sports teams in the country.

Fans lose it after Stephen A. Smith’s boasts against Pelicans

In this entire rant, basketball fans caught onto Stephen A. Smith’s claim that he is bigger than the New Orleans Pelicans. It would have been all right had he compared himself to a player.

But to claim he was bigger than an organization valued at $3.55 billion, fans were not having it. They took to social media to either troll or mock the father of two. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Stephen A. Smith may have a point when he pointed out how the New Orleans Pelicans have essentially been the definition of an underperforming franchise, with their two playoff series wins in their history.

He also pointed out how they should be ashamed of going after him, especially as they could only post one season with 50+ wins. However, fans believe that while stating these facts, he should not have compared himself to the franchise.

Draymond Green goes OFF on Stephen A. Smith’s criticism

While Stephen A. Smith gets trolled by fans, Draymond Green, on the other hand, also took shots at the longtime analyst after criticizing the Warriors star.

The problem that I have is we’re calling for all this accountability, but all these guys just get to say things, and there’s zero accountability… How long does everyone just get to throw things at a wall and see if it sticks, and be called experts?

Draymond Green said on his namesake show

This happened after Smith mentioned how Green was wrong to call out the media for their hypocritical opinions on former Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic.

The four-time champion believes that these so-called ‘experts’ have shown zero accountability when it comes to criticizing anyone. Therefore, they should not be the ones deciding what is right and wrong.
