The iconic legal drama Suits is back with a new-look cast led by Stephen Amell, who plays the protagonist Ted Black. In the previous version of the show, protagonist Harvey Specter was an avid sports fan. His love for baseball and basketball could be interpreted from his collection of signed memorabilia showcased in his office.
In the original show starring Gabriel Macht as legal genius Harvey Specter, there were more references made to Michael Jordan rather than a player of any other sport. In one episode, Charles Barkley made a cameo as well. There were not many references made to football players except to Tom Brady on one or two occasions.
Harvey Specter was a fan of basketball icon Michael Jordan so it is only fair that Suits LA continue the tradition of linking a competitive lawyer’s mentality with that of an athlete in their prime. Stephen Amell AKA Ted Black on the show made a reference to Patrick Mahomes in the very first episode of the show.
To add some context, Ted faces betrayal from the co-founder of his firm, Stuart Lane (played by Josh McDermitt). Minutes before, Ted Black convinces a client to stick to Stuart as his defense attorney in his murder case. However, Stuart decides to join hands with Ted’s ex-girlfriend Samantha (played by Rachelle Goulding), and this time, Ted backtracks as he urges the same client to go with him over Stuart as his lawyer.
To prove his dominance over his peer, Stephen Amell makes the first sports reference in Suits LA.
There is nothing in this world Stuart Lane is better at than me…he doesn’t believe you. I do. It’s the fourth quarter and you need a touchdown. You can go with Kirk Cousins or Patrick Mahomes, who’s it gonna be?

Stephen Amell took a stray shot at Kirk Cousins
Unfortunately, Kirk Cousins caught a stray because Amell essentially called him an average and unreliable quarterback in comparison to Mahomes. Ultimately, the line is enough to convince the client to go with Ted Black. This time, the writers of the show are attempting to woo the NFL fanbase. Previously, Harvey Specter (played by Gabriel Macht) seldom made NFL references.

The show’s love for baseball is continued as Stephen Amell’s character is an avid fan of the New York Yankees. His one-liner in this instance was on point. Patrick Mahomes is the new definition of clutch. Super Bowl LIX performance aside, the quarterback has 19 successful fourth-quarter comebacks and 23-game-winning drives to his credit. Those are remarkable numbers for a quarterback and to think that he still has a lot of gas left in the tank is scary.
The quarterback is widely regarded as being the best closer since Tom Brady. Mahomes has eight touchdown drives in the playoffs when trailing, which is the third-most amongst active NFL quarterbacks. When trailing in the fourth quarter, Mahomes has six touchdown passes, trailing Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson who have eight and seven TDs respectively. He has the clutch gene no matter what the critics say.
