The Currys and the Brinks share a common space in the ever-present limelight for their history that goes way back to Virginia Tech. In a recent episode of Cameron Brink‘s podcast, Stephen Curry‘s mom, Sonya Curry, shed some light on the dating rules of her children. Much to the audience’s dismay, they called out the subtle discrimination found in her approach based on gender.

Sonya Curry and Michelle Brink were the latest guests on “Straight to Cam” with Cameron Brink and Sydel Curry. Being close to the family, the WNBA star put the light on her godmother and broached the distinct dating guidelines set for the Curry children.

The mom of three swore the age limit to 16, however, it did not align with her daughter, Sydel’s memory of her childhood. The two got in a disagreement, with Stephen Curry’s mom recalling his ex-girlfriend whom she met after he was 16.

However, they settled when Sydel Curry alleged that she had to pass more hurdles before going out with guys than her brothers’ with their partners. The NBA star’s mom justified it was because they were daughters, implying the extra caution it required. “But you’re girls, so it has to be a little bit different,” Sonya Curry stated.

The attempt at justification received a straight ‘No’ loud and clear from Sydel Curry and Cameron Brink. The clip went viral on the internet, with people noting down the tensions in the room. Along with that, the fans did not take kindly to the multiple styles of upbringing within the Curry family.

While the comments were made with the best of intentions, the internet’s portrayal varied from the initial dispute. Despite the criticisms, some also noted the lighthearted banter and laughed off the incidents of the past.

Some of them were eager to know more about Stephen Curry’s ex that Sonya mentioned in the episode. However, it was purely to poke fun at the Golden State Warriors star. Notably, he and his wife Ayesha Curry met when he was 15 and she was a year younger. Reportedly, after meeting at a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, they reconnected much later in 2008 when they started dating.

Stephen Curry steadily climbed to fame and victory in the NBA after his draft in the 2009 Draft class. The Warriors’ 7th pick stunned the audience with his impressive skills on the court and off-court charisma. Along with him, his whole family was put in the light and extreme public attention. The NBA star’s mom, Sonya Curry, was one of the people who faced it firsthand.

In a recent appearance on The Travis Hearn Podcast, Sonya Curry promoted her book, which she almost cancelled due to the public scrutiny that would have followed. While there were perks of being influential, it was not without significant drawbacks.

Primarily, it was the lack of privacy that the mom of three had to adjust to. Speaking of her book, she admitted to the fictional elements that came from the fear of the critics. According to Sonya Curry, the people would not have responded fairly to the harsh truths of Stephen Curry’s family’s life.

She also recalled how people waited outside her residence and booed after her son had a bad day on the court. Another time, she was scorned at her face during a match, which led to an altercation. These moments were only some of the incidents from her bad experiences with fame. Before Stephen Curry, it was her husband, Dell Curry, who brought attention to the family.
