Gilbert Arenas does not consider Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic 'generational talents'.
Scoring the most three-pointers in NBA history and dominating the stats of all three categories are not enough to get considered as a ‘generational talent’, according to Gilbert Arenas. The former NBA player dropped a controversial take about Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic during an episode of his podcast ‘Gil’s Arena’.
Arenas claimed Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic are not in the same category as LeBron James or Victor Wembanyama. According to the former Wizards star, ‘physical traits’ are the leading factor for a player to get considered as a ‘generational talent’.
Steph is not a generational talentYou know what a generational -- (Victor Wembanyama) is a generational person that is a generational talent. Generational means you can’t mimic it. Can you mimic Magic Johnson -- six-foot-nine point guard with the vision? No. You can’t mimic Shaquille O'Neal’s body. You can’t mimic f**king LeBron James.-- Those are generational, physical traits are generational. Somebody like Giannis (Antetokounmpo) is tweaking. Like, (Nikola) Jokic is not a generational talent, he’s just a great basketball player. Curry is a great basketball player. Generational is something that’s once every 20 -- when it comes, you’re like, ‘Damn.Gilbert Arenas said
Curry is widely known as the best shooter the league has ever seen. Even way ahead in the future, it would certainly be difficult for a player to break Curry’s ongoing three-point record. Similarly, with Jokic, the Serbian’s versatile talent has won him three MVPs and a championship in a span of four years. The star also often gets called the best player in the world in today’s game.
However, Gilbert Arenas believes that the duo’s talent and achievements can be mimicked in the future. Which is not the case for a 6’9″ point guard like Magic Johnson or the physically dominant Shaquille O’Neal. The former player relied more on physical features than talent to define a generational phenomenon which resulted in some criticism towards Arenas.
Gilbert Arenas kept Stephen Curry above Magic Johnson in PG conversations
Arenas has stayed consistent with his thoughts about Jokic as he has previously called him the worst MVP. However, that is not the case when it comes to Curry. Despite not considering him a generational talent and praising the 6’9 point guard, Arenas kept Curry above Johnson for being the greatest at the position.
Not even a year ago, as the conversations about the best point guard were rising, Arenas claimed that Curry’s four titles held more value than Johnson’s five rings. According to Arenas, Curry had built up his Warriors dynasty as Johnson simply joined the Lakers.
If we’re going to say the best point guard ever, I have to give it to the guy who technically came from the mud, hurt, losing, bad team. Like Michael Jordan, we see you’re team was trash, and y’all built this championship. Steph Curry built this championship.Gilbert Arenas said
It seems as if Arenas’ opinions have changed in the past year. The Warriors’ poor run in the past season may have played some part in the former player’s change of heart. Curry and the Warriors were unable to even make it to the playoffs after winning a championship in 2022.
