The past couple of days have been tough for the New York Mets. The team lost two of their core players, Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Baltimore Orioles, respectively. Following their departure, team owner Steve Cohen sent a message to the Mets fans.
The 2025 season turned out to be a major disappointment for the Mets. Following a solid start, they crumbled in the second half of the season.
The team went from having a 45-24 record to missing the playoffs on the final day of the campaign with a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins. The Mets finished with an 83-79 record.
Following their 4-0 loss against the Marlins on the final day of the season, Pete Alonso announced his decision to opt out of his deal. The first baseman had re-signed with the Mets earlier this year on a 2-year, $54 million deal which had an opt-out close.
Edwin Diaz would also opt out of his deal. The closer had two years and $38 million guaranteed on his contract. On Tuesday, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a 3-year, $69 million deal. As per reports, the Mets had offered him a 3-year, $66 million deal.

As the Mets fans coped with the loss of the 3-time All-Star closer, they received another massive blow on Wednesday. Alonso, their home run leader, joined the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million, making it the highest AAV for a first baseman.

With the team now having lost two of their core players, the fans have been left upset with the front office. Following their departures, team owner Steve Cohen reassured the fanbase and expressed that there was still a lot of time left in the offseason to build a championship-calibre team.
I totally understand the fans’ reaction. There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field.

Apart from these two, the Mets also lost another veteran in Brandon Nimmo. Two weeks ago, he was traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien, a move that left many fans taking a swipe at the team management.
Radio host blasts Steve Cohen for allowing Pete Alonso to walk away from NY Mets
The New York Mets are about to start a new era. On Wednesday, the team’s chapter with Pete Alonso came to an end after the first baseman joined the Baltimore Orioles on a massive deal. A radio host would later blast Steve Cohen for allowing Alonso to walk away from the team.

Alonso, who joined the team through a draft in 2016, would make his debut in 2019. In his rookie season, the American international slugged 53 home runs and was named as the NL Rookie of the Year.
The “Polar Bear” would go on to become a key member of the team. This season, he overtook Darryl Strawberry and became the all-time home run leader of the Mets following his 253rd blast. He ends his Mets career with 264 home runs.
Longtime radio host Joe Beningo would later attack Cohen for allowing Alonso to leave. Beningo, who had previously attacked GM David Stearns, expressed that the Mets owner sold them “bill of goods” and labelled him as the real culprit.
The guy that’s the real culprit is the owner. The owner sold us a bill of goods… He’s supposed to be like Mr. Met, I gotta see him courtside at the Garden at the playoff games with the Met hat on. What kind of Met fan are you? You telling me you’re a Met fan, Cohen? Forget about Stearns, he’s a fraud as far as a Met fan. He’s probably got Yankee gear at home.

As per reports, the Mets never made a formal offer to Pete Alonso this year. Last year, the team were dragged into a long negotiations regarding him. At one point, Cohen pointed out that they were not happy with what was presented to them.
This offseason, the team did not participate in the sweepstakes of Alonso when it became clear that bidding was going places in which they were not interested to go.

Cohen and his front office now have a significant gap to fill in the team’s offence. It will be interesting to see what the team does as they usher into the post-Alonso era.
