On Saturday night, the Golden State Warriors had an unlikely hero in their 99-94 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Rocket Arena, and it was none other than Pat Spencer. The guard has made a name for himself over the last few games due to the absence of star player Stephen Curry.

It was a game that very few would have expected the Warriors to emerge victorious. The Dubs had lost six out of their eight games and were coming into the game without the services of Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green. With only ten players available, no one was quite sure who would provide the firepower against a team that was 9-5 at home.

But the Warriors managed to find their spark from the most unlikeliest of sources, Pat Spencer, who is on a two-way contract with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League. The guard recorded 19 points, four rebounds and seven assists in 29 minutes on Saturday. Due to his two-way contract, the guard can play in 50 games this campaign and has already featured in 24 so far. With Curry expected to miss a few more games, Spencer has made a case for himself.

The 29-year-old was the orchestrator of comebacks against both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. While both games ended up in close losses, there were some positives for head coach Steve Kerr. The guard is currently averaging 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists this season. Over the last three games, Spencer has been averaging 17.3 points.

It was such an impressive performance that even Kerr could not control himself in the press-conference.

He’s really improved his jump shot. Last year he would turn down a lot of threes, drive in, shoot a lot of floaters. The shot quality now we are getting with him on the floor is way better than it was in the last couple of years. The other thing is that his coach realized that Pat is that mother fu****. That became clear. Sorry. Am I allowed to say that?

Only time will tell if the Warriors will be able to find a way to add Spencer to the roster, especially if he continues to perform this way.

Room for improvement for Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski

With the absence of the three veterans, it was expected that most of the offensive and ball-handling duties would be on Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. There is no doubt that the two can do better as they have had their share of struggles this season.

Kuminga is in the trade rumors once again and after an entire offseason of drama. It remains to be seen of the former number seven pick wins the trust of Kerr again or will be a part of a trade package anytime soon. And with Podziemski, it is his inconsistent performances.

Kerr made it clear what he expects from his two young stars.

With JK, always run the floor. Take care of the ball. Turnovers have been an issue lately. I’m really urging him to get on the floor instead of holding back… I want him to be the first guy down the floor, not the last. He’s got to get off the ball early (About Podziemski). When he gets into trouble is when he tries too hard to make plays on his own instead of what he does best, which is to move the ball and be part of a five-man group that is really executing.

Can the Oklahoma City break the Warriors’ 73-9 record?

There is no stopping the defending and reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, at the moment. They sit at the top of the Western Conference standings with a 22-1 record and are currently on a 14-match winning streak. They are flirting with a potentially historic season.

Kerr has been a part of the Chicago Bulls, 72-10, team led by Michael Jordan in 1996 and was the coach of the 73-9 Warriors team in 2016. Hence, the 60-year-old knows what it takes to achieve the record.

All their actions that they’re running, they’re so comfortable with. They’ve expanded their offense a little bit, and they have a little more motion than they did a year ago. (About the record) I just told our guys I never in a million years would have guessed that record would ever be broken. I thought it was like DiMaggio’s hit streak […] I don’t think this one will ever be broken.

With one of the best starts ever to an NBA regular season, the OKC are more than capable of going for 74 wins this season.
