NBA’s one of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan, is well known for his mental toughness and immense competitiveness throughout his career in the league. His former teammate and current Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, recently appeared on the Glue Guys podcast and spoke about various issues in and around the NBA during the past days and the present.
However, the one topic that garnered immense attention from the NBA community was Kerr’s explanation of how Jordan was relentless with his teammates. As he sought greater standards from everyone around him, the 59-year-old clarified that ‘MJ’s’ attitude was based on pushing players to their ultimate boundaries, both intellectually and physically.
That was his way. He was not an easy teammate. He drove us so hard and held everyone to such high standards that he literally drove people off the team. His theory was that if you couldn’t stand the heat in practice from him, then you wouldn’t be able to handle the heat of the NBA Finals. You had to bring it every single day because he brought it, and he set an incredible tone.

Beginning when he signed with the Bulls in 1993—the same year Michael first retired because he chose to give baseball a try—Kerr and Jordan’s bond developed over almost ten years. Kerr, who is mainly recognized for his clutch plays and accurate three-point shooting, was crucial to Chicago’s second title three-peat, even though he largely came off the bench.
Notably, Kerr is not the only teammate who has praised Jordan’s strict behavior toward both himself and his teammates. Numerous NBA experts and former players have discussed the NBA legend’s style of play, which is characterized by an unwavering work ethic that went beyond the regular campaign and playoffs.
In contrast to today’s players, who view the NBA All-Star game as a lighthearted demonstration, Jordan even brought his aggressiveness to the exhibition game. Such was the mindset of ‘His Airness,’ who won 6 NBA titles throughout his illustrious career.
Steve Kerr makes a similar comparison between Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry
On the Glue Guys podcast, Kerr also touched upon an interesting topic involving Stephen Curry and the great Michael Jordan. The current Warriors’ head coach spoke about how Curry and Jordan share similar mindsets, despite being from different generations. Kerr claimed that Curry is one of the few who has the same competitiveness that Jordan had back then.
They’re similar in their self-confidence, self-belief. Different in that I think Michael’s much more calculating. I don’t think Steph’s so calculating, I just think his ability to get into the rhythm, into the flow, into the zone, psychologically, emotionally, however you want to say it, was so unique… Whereas with Michael, it’s more of an announced dominance. It’s like, ‘I’m here, and I’m going to own the space and the arena.’
Steve Kerr added

Both of them rank among the greatest offensive forces in basketball history thanks to the self-assurance Kerr talks about. Since he consistently attracts the defense’s attention, Curry is one of the few players who may be even more dangerous off the ball than on it.
The Warriors have been among the best in the league for more than ten years and are seen as innovators who transformed basketball, much like Jordan did for the Bulls in the past.
Michael Jordan once ridiculed the NBA All-Star Game’s effort levels
For the spectators who paid to see him play, Michael Jordan always put on a fantastic show, regardless of his health during his playing career. No matter what game they played, even the NBA All-Star Exhibition games, Jordan always believed that one had to give it their all and show respect for those watching.
Jordan once criticized and mocked the modern players’ efforts in 2019 about this. He presented an intriguing argument on how it is a chance to honor and represent the audience by performing with passion and heart.
It’s a different time obviously. Anytime you have an opportunity to represent the fans, it’s about playing with your heart and your passion. It’s been going on for years. The players are different but the idea of showcasing and playing and representing and saying thanks to the fans is the same. The fans see that, and that’s where you bond with the fans and when you do that.

Despite Jordan calling out the modern players in 2019, nothing seemed to change. It worsened. The NBA All-Star Exhibition’s viewership has declined over the last few years. Players have lost competitiveness during this event, which fans do not seem to be content with. This has bridged the gap between the fans and the players over the last few years, with Jordan’s statements making more sense with each passing year.
