Steve Kerr’s ‘What the f**k’ play: LeBron James and Team USA go VIRAL for amazing tactics
LeBron James and his Team USA teammates will need to learn a lot of schemes to be effective.
Steve Kerr's Golden State Warriors play 'What the f**k' used by LeBron James and Team USA
When Team USA assembled the biggest names in the NBA, they knew they had to play together under one game plan. Head coach Steve Kerr, assistant coaches Erik Spoelstra, Ty Lue, and Mark Few are 4 of the most successful basketball coaches in the country. Implementing their combined coaching tactics would require the likes of LeBron James, who has a high IQ and can play it out on the court.
One such play went viral in today’s first friendly game against Canada. Steve Kerr called out ‘What the f**k’, a play that is run extensively by the Golden State Warriors. As the name indicates, it is handled with elegance and simplicity. Hearing this, guard Jrue Holiday inbounded the ball to Anthony Davis near the 3-point line. Then Davis dished it to a streaking LeBron James for an easy two-handed jam.
With the Golden State Warriors, the primary scorer off the pass is Stephen Curry when he comes off a screen. However, for Team USA to take advantage of it, every player should be able to score. The guards and forwards moving off screens set by multiple players can score. It indicates movement and the ability to finish as priorities.
They rehearsed this play quite a few times during practice with multiple players in different roles. Therefore, using such simple yet effective schemes is vital for all these superstars to achieve success quickly. Other than a handful of players, nobody has experience playing alongside one another.
LeBron James and Team USA have work to do despite win against Canada
Team USA might have won against Canada, but there were a few obvious things. Firstly, it was friendly, suggesting that Canada also took it lightly as they rested most of their starters for much of the game. Secondly, the disconnect between Team USA players was evident throughout the game. Thirdly, they have to figure out their combinations.
They won today’s game behind good individual performances. However, when facing international teams, that method will not work. The other teams have better chemistry, having played together for a long time. Therefore, Team USA coaches will have to drill some schemes so that they can follow those for the majority of the game.
Two players were already sidelined, and on top of that Joel Embiid fouled out. So, they still haven’t played to their strengths. They can revert to their one-on-one prowess when needed, but the team has to play together to figure it all out.
