If the College Playoff semifinal against Ohio State was quarterback Quinn Ewers and head coach Steve Sarkisian’s final game for the Texas Longhorns, then the pair will leave with a sour final memory. Ryan Day’s Buckeyes blitzed the 21-year-old quarterback whenever they had the chance on Friday night at the AT&T Stadium.

Ewers was charged 27 times in the game and one of them had to eventually pay off, and it did. He led Texas inside Ohio State’s ten-yard line, and Sarkisian decided to take a page out of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s book by going for it on fourth down.

Right after Ewers snapped the ball and stepped back, Buckeyes’ star pass rusher Jack Sawyer landed a solid hit on the Texas quarterback, forcing a fumble to score a fumble return touchdown, giving Ohio State a 14-point lead and the possession back. Sawyer’s predecessor, All-Pro Nick Bosa, would be proud.

ESPN’s Pat McAfee was covering the live form; the goal was elated with Sawyer’s efforts. However, Ewers’ costly mistake took away the chance of a late comeback which broke Steve Sarkisian.

The game ended 28-14 for the Buckeyes winning the Cotton Bowl and qualifying for the final to play against Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame team that defeated Penn State in the other semifinal.

Steve Sarkisian and Quinn Ewers’ future with the Texas Longhorns is doubtful

Even before the CFP semifinal in Arlington, there was chatter about the future of both Sarkisian and Ewers. It would have been better to end if they had won the college playoffs, but Ohio State proved to be a tough opponent.

Ewers’ fate was sealed even before the game kicked off. Initially, scouts projected him to declare for the draft as soon as the season was over, but rumors started to float that Ewers planned to return to college football for one more year but not at Texas.

He had a $6 million offer on the table from a mysterious school that wanted him as their quarterback for 2025. However, the recent update suggests that he has reverted back to his original plans to enter the draft.

As for Sarkisian, inside sources believe he is a dark horse for the Dallas Cowboys job if Mike McCarthy leaves. ESPN’s Get Up host Mike Greenberg threw the idea out in the open.

What is the big thing that happens between now and January 14th? Steve Sarkisian’s season might end, and (Jerry Jones) might get the opportunity to have that conversation before (Mike McCarthy’s) exclusive window.

Mike Greenberg said

Nothing is set in stone, but senior NFL writer Jeremy Fowler recently wrote in an article that the Cowboys might retain McCarthy. Owner Jerry Jones still has faith in the coach who led the team to three consecutive 12-5 finishes even though the 2024 campaign ended with a 7-10 record.

Unlike the Jets and the Patriots, the Cowboys haven’t set up any kind of interviews with any coaches. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen and Sarkisian is out of the picture. McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys ends on January 14th, and if Jones doesn’t make a move before the deadline, then a flurry of names will pop up as potential candidates and Sarkisian could be one of them.
