Rangers win against Royal Antwerp meant that Steven Gerrard overtakes former manager Walter Smith’s record of 23 wins
Rangers and Royal Antwerp played the second leg of their Round of 32 clash in the Europa League yesterday. Goals from Alfredo Morelos, Nathan Patterson, Ryan Kent, Borna Barisic and Cedric Itten meant that Rangers won 5-2 against Royal Antwerp. The aggregate score read 9-6 to Rangers and became the highest scoring two legged tie after Helsingborgs v Heerenveen ended 8-6. Steven Gerrard’s exploits over the last 3 years haven’t been spoken enough.
Steven Gerrard now has 24 wins over the last 43 games in European competitions
24 wins, 14 draws and 5 defeats is Steven Gerrard’s record as Rangers manager since he took over them in the 2018/19 season. His appointment was met with confusion and concern, but in three years he has made Rangers into one of the most attractive attacking teams in Europe. Rangers have thwarted Celtic from winning their 10th title in 10 years in record fashion as they just need 7 points from the next 3 matches to win the title.
Yesterday’s match saw some superb attacking brilliance as Royal Antwerp threatened Rangers and made things difficult for them. However the attacking firepower of Rangers was enough to win the match as Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent led the team from the front. Alfredo Morelos scored once while setting up two goals and won a penalty for Rangers while Ryan Kent scored once and assisted once.
All in all, Steven Gerrard has broken Walter Smith’s record of 23 wins and is creating his own history. Project Liverpool on now?
