Sting joined AEW in late 2020 and worked for the company for more than three years before hanging up his boots for good. He was undefeated throughout his tenure with AEW and seemed to enjoy his time working there. Even after his retirement from wrestling, the Icon seems to have extended his relationship with the company.

Speaking to Kayfabe Friends, Sting revealed that he recently signed a new multi-year deal with AEW. He said that he won’t be wrestling for the promotion anymore, but his deal is similar to that of a licensing deal, akin to WWE and their Legends contracts. The exact duration or the monetary amount of the deal is still unknown.

The 65-year-old revealed that he would still do occasional appearances for the company when they required him to do so. He recently made a one-off appearance at AEW All In 2024. Jack Perry, alongside The Young Bucks, was about to set Darby Allin on fire while he was locked inside a coffin. The WCW legend came out to save his tag team partner as the London crowd went wild.

This deal will allow AEW to continue to sell merchandise bearing Sting’s likeness and use his character for their video games. Furthermore, it will likely bar him from appearing in any other wrestling promotions, such as WWE.

Vince McMahon wanted Sting to retire under the WWE banner

After Vince McMahon bought WCW in 2001, Sting was hesitant to come work for WWE. He was afraid of the way that Vinnie Mac would treat former WCW talent in his company. Regardless, he finally made his way over to the Stamford-based promotion in 2014. Unfortunately, he suffered a neck injury at Night of Champions 2015 and would announce his first retirement from wrestling during his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2016.

Speaking to Kayfabe Friends, the Vigilante revealed that he had left the future of his career open-ended. He wasn’t fully sure if he wanted to wrestle another match for WWE or go to another promotion. While he did not want to retire at the time, Vince McMahon wanted him to do so under the WWE umbrella. However, he would eventually make his way to AEW in 2020.

It was kind of a mutual deal with WWE at that time. Vince wanted me to retire under his umbrella. And at that time I was okay with that

The Icon eventually went on to have a near-perfect retirement from professional wrestling earlier this year at AEW Revolution. The show was held at the Greensboro Complex, a venue that holds a lot of cultural significance to the 65-year-old’s career and WCW.
