During his heyday, many regarded Earl Thomas to be one of the best free safeties of the last decade. He was one of the founding members of the Seattle Seahawks famed ‘Legion of Boom’. Along with his elite play and intelligence he had a standout career.
However, that intelligence did not seem to work in his personal life over these past few years. During the heights of his success with the Seattle Seahawks, he married the love of his life Nina Thomas in 2016 with Russell Wilson and Ciara attending the luxurious wedding.
In due course, the couple had three children and were living the high life. However, their personal life took a turn for the worse after his last year in the NFL. In 2020, Nina Thomas held her husband at gunpoint after she found him and his brother in bed with other women.
Soon after that, she filed for divorce, and they separated. However, as per TMZ, that was the start of the problems the five-time All-Pro faced with his now ex-wife. She and her accomplice started siphoning money out of the Super Bowl champion’s accounts.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Nina Thomas spent some of that money on breast implants and a Hermes Birkin handbag. Only after the feds investigated the case did they realize she stole $2.7 million worth cash and property from her former husband.
Authorities arrested the mother of three on Dec 16th but released her a while later. She has been charged with multiple counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft. It is unclear what action will be taken against Nina Thomas or if Earl Thomas will get his money back.
Earl Thomas had stellar but tumultuous NFL career
Earl Thomas came into the NFL as a first-round pick for the rebuilding Seattle Seahawks as one of the first picks of the John Schneider–Pete Carroll era. Along with his stellar Legion of Boom partners, he turned the Seahawks defense into a dominant force.
Part of that standout career was the 2013 Super Bowl win when they embarrassed the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos. It was a testament to the Legion of Boom’s reputation as the high-powered Broncos offense managed just eight points.
However, after the shock loss to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots the following season, the Seahawks preferred to reduce their focus on the defense and prioritize the Russell Wilson-led offense. That started to cause friction between Earl Thomas and the Seahawks hierarchy.
In the fourth game of the 2018 season, Thomas broke his leg. As they carted him off the field, he flashed a finger to the Seahawks sideline. That was the last time he wore the colors of his drafting franchise.
The Baltimore Ravens signed him to a four-year contract released him a year later. With a reputation of being uncoachable and a locker cancer, no other team wanted to sign him. He might not have retired, but his NFL career is well and truly behind him.
