2008 NBA champion and Finals MVP, Paul Pierce, is one of the biggest legends in Boston Celtics. Pierce has significantly contributed to making the Celtics the “greatest” franchise in the history of NBA. A title they often compete for with their biggest rivals, Los Angeles Lakers.
While growing up in California, Pierce was an avid Lakers fan and hated the Celtics till he was drafted by the team in green in 1998 as the 10th overall pick. Since then, the 10-time All-Star has shared a deed history and loyalty to the Celtics franchise, with whom he won an NBA championship in 2008.
Recently, Pierce made an appearance on Celebrity Poker Tour. Professional athletes, social media stars, and content creators all battle against each other in Celebrity Poker Tour events. In the middle of a round, streamer Sketch took off his hoodie, put on a headband (like Pierce did) and showed off his Boston jersey.
While Pierce did not notice it immediately, he showed excitement when he saw the jersey, saying, “That is crazy right there. He got the Celtics jersey on.” Pierce, then, took out his phone and called his kids to show what was going on.

Paul Pierce on NBA players burning money
Playing basketball in the NBA is one of the most lucrative jobs in sports. For the 2025-26 season, the average salary in the NBA is approximately $12.7 million. A minimum rookie salary is $1.3 million per year and a veteran’s minimum is $2.5 million per annum. But, still stories come across of players who have burned through their earnings and back to the rags again.
During an episode on Club Shay Shay, the Hall of Famer, discussed why and how these players go broke despite earning tens of millions of dollars.
My maximum contract, my first contract, was 80 million. So let’s cut that in half, 40. The agent fee. Then you talk about you want to get a house. Now I got a big deal, I want to get a house now. So I spent like four or five million on the house. State taxes on that. Now I got the family on payroll, boom. So now that’s about another like half a million, which every half a million costs you a million. And so it can go faster than you think. And then everybody ain’t making my money. The majority of the league is making way lower than that.

Paul Pierce on Ray Allen joining LeBron James
During his time with the Celtics, Pierce combined with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007 to form a “Big Three” that led Boston to two NBA Finals and an NBA championship in 2008. While player movement is very normal and common in the NBA, some movements may not go down well, especially when the player ends up joining a rival.

The infamous one was when Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City Thunder and joined the Golden State Warriors, the team that beat him and OKC in the Western Conference finals, while being 3-1 up in the prior season. But that was not the first time.
Ray Allen made a similar move when he left Boston to join LeBron James in Miami. He joined Boston in 2007 and four years later, he left for the Heat, right after Miami knocked Boston out in seven games in an epic Eastern Conference Finals. Pierce stated:
It was absolutely where he went. You got to understand, we’ve been battling LeBron for the last four or five years… The Heat aren’t our rival, it’s LeBron. He’s our rival. So like dude, we just played them in the playoffs a year ago, you can’t go play with them. I would have been better off with him going to the Lakers, and that’s our biggest rival. I would have been cooler with him doing that.

“We didn’t have no conversation with him, listen, we and I tell this story every time we was a brotherhood, and for you to abruptly leave without a conversation. – @paulpierce34 pic.twitter.com/B3lL6IAkYG
Allen went on to win a championship with the Heat but it did fracture some relationships with his former teammates in Boston. Allen went on to defend his decision and spoke about how he felt disrespected by the front-office..
