Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a hilarious on-field exchange with Shubman Gill, while they were batting in the opening Test against England. Jaiswal was caught on the stump mic, requesting his teammate to stop him from taking risky singles, from the other end of the crease.
It was a day to remember for Yashasvi Jaiswal, as he slammed his fifth Test century in the first innings of India’s series opener against England, at Headingley, Leeds. The 23-year-old scored 101 runs off 159 balls, hitting 16 boundaries and a six. For Jaiswal, it marked his first Test hundred on English soil, as it made him the first overseas player to score a century on debut, both in England and in Australia.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive start set the tone for India, as they concluded their first innings with 471 runs. KL Rahul contributed 42 off 78 balls, while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant both scored impressive centuries. Though Jaiswal displayed his calm batting prowess and grit, the young batter admitted to Gill during an on-field conversation, about his struggles while running between the wickets.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Shubman Gill forged a much-needed 129-run stand off 163 balls. While the two were batting in the 38th over on Day 1, Jaiswal was caught in the middle of a confusing moment after he wanted to take a quick single off Chris Woakes’ delivery. The 23-year-old was however, stopped by his captain midway with a loud ‘no’ call, as he rushed back towards his crease.

"Just tell me NO loudly when you don't want a run, I've a habit to run after hitting". 🤣❤️pic.twitter.com/VrtE2C5bDq
Yashasvi Jaiswal was quick to realise his mistake, as he was caught having a hilarious conversation on the stump mic. He urged Gill to loudly yell ‘no’ to prevent him from attempting risky singles, admitting he sometimes gets overly excited and goes for quick runs:
Haan, haan bolte rehana bas. Meri aadat hain aage jaane ki. Haan bas nahi nahi. Mereko zor se no boldo. [Please keep telling me. It’s my habit to move ahead. Just tell me loudly no but it is my habit.]
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s occasional indecisiveness while running between the wickets in Test matches has frequently drawn criticism. A similar incident occurred during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne.
Jaiswal, batting at 82 off 118 balls, called Virat Kohli for a quick single after hitting the ball to mid-on. However, a significant miscommunication resulted in him being run out, as he was nearly halfway down the pitch while Kohli remained unmoved.

Fans and cricket analysts held Yashasvi Jaiswal at fault for the mix-up, which ultimately cost India the match, as they lost by 184 runs. Therefore, the 23-year-old will be hoping to avoid committing such errors during the ongoing five-match Test series, in England.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Surpasses Sir Don Bradman’s Record with Brilliant Hundred Against England
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal surpassed Australian cricketing great Sir Don Bradman’s record against England, with a splendid century against the Three Lions at Headingley, Leeds. Jaiswal scored an impressive 101 runs off 159 balls at a strike rate of 63.52, hitting 16 boundaries and a six.

The Southpaw has now scored 813 runs in 10 innings against England Tests, having scored two double centuries against them just a year ago. Jaiswal surpassed Don Bradman to become the player with the highest individual average against England. The Australian great scored 5028 runs against England at an average of 89.78, while Jaiswal has scored at a higher average of 90.33.
